I was going to go crossfire 290's but i got a good deal on a 980 ti. I will probably never sell my 290 however, considering how special it is.

compare graphics scores. 7970 to 290 is only about 20 to 30 percent increase depending clocks. tahitis are known to score high in FS and 1250 is above average oc.

my 290's at 1250 get around 25K in graphics score.

My 290 with a Hynix is pretty good on the memory at 1700+ MHz.
hopefully you don't get one like my bottom card...elpidia memory and over 1400 black screens..oddly ive never seen it artifact the first time just black screens after 1400 I might could push voltage up more but honestly I'm not willing to potentially lose the card for another 50 or even 100mhz on memory clock that likely won't help a whole lot

Yeah. Fingers crossed. That 980ti is hard to give up. But it's like 3 vs 1 trade.

And, one of the cards is unlockable.! Not sure which between the powercolor and the sapphire though. thumb.gif

Not all cards are created equal. My old 290 can only do 1375 before black screening. Just luck of the lottery.

I would say, it is a bit low!

I have OC'd my 290's to 1200/1450 for benchmarking, but I mainly run them at stock clocks 24/7 (gives me more than enough performance anyways), so I'm not concerned at all. I could have gone with a cheaper quality 1000w bronze PSU, but decided to go with a top quality 850w gold unit instead (the best I could afford). The quality of the components used and the design of the unit also plays a significant roll in stability/longevity as well.

Besides that, I agree with you 100% - never skimp of the PSU. wink.gif

It works for you because you have a efficient cpu and your gpu's run mostly on stock and have a high quality 850w psu. If you push those gpu's to 1200+ core and 1600 mem + push a amd cpu to high frequencies. You will hit over the 850w at times.

Example:

This is with a newer i7 ( which is better on the wattage ) on 4,4ghz with 2x 290's at 1040/1400 each ( minor overclock ).
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

A single gpu is probably going to increase about ~60w on a heavy overclock at worst case scenario which will be about 120w for both. Yea good luck with that. Let's not even talk about a lesser efficient cpu that uses a lot more wattage ( like amd has ) then that intel newer cpu's pushes.

1000w gold quality psu is absolutely going to be needed to get stuff going stable, a cheap 1000w or a cheap any watt is never going to work well.

Unless you keep stuff at stock ( gpu wise ) and have a solid cpu that doesn't push wattage to the max a good quality 850 watt psu will work.

Currently benching a STABLE and COOL (loud fans though tongue.gif) 1248/1651mhz overclock on my 290X VaporX @ 200mv. I think this is shaping up to be one of the best clockers I've ever had. And I just boight it second hand!

Sold my poorly clocking RMAed 290 and paid a difference of 60 euro for a better clocking290X with 4 extra gb of vram biggrin.gif

Well I failed at the print screen but have the log to prove it. 68.4FPS. 1080p AA and Tess maxed. 1252mhz core and 1650mhz memory.
