Topcard is 390 Nitro and the other is a 290 Vapor

You have an overclocked 6 core though.

My older i7 at 4.7ghz and 290 crossfire at 1150/1350 hits mid 17,000

390 + 290 Crossfire will always faster than 290 + 290 Crossfire at same clocks. Also, 1150/1600 vs. 1100/1350. Come on.

You should be comparing gpu scores not overall. And the best to compare is fire strike extreme.
Indeed graphic score is the way to compare mine scores iver 24k @ 1100/1500 , so getting extra 70/150 mhz on core and mem I will probably hit 25k in graphics.

sure is it faster BUT not 8k faster! the gap is to huge

edit: old RIG http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5721307 lower clocks and still more points...

Example:

This is with a newer i7 ( which is better on the wattage ) on 4,4ghz with 2x 290's at 1040/1400 each ( minor overclock ).
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

A single gpu is probably going to increase about ~60w on a heavy overclock at worst case scenario which will be about 120w for both. Yea good luck with that. Let's not even talk about a lesser efficient cpu that uses a lot more wattage ( like amd has ) then that intel newer cpu's pushes.

1000w gold quality psu is absolutely going to be needed to get stuff going stable, a cheap 1000w or a cheap any watt is never going to work well.

Unless you keep stuff at stock ( gpu wise ) and have a solid cpu that doesn't push wattage to the max a good quality 850 watt psu will work.

don't we have to factor in efficiency?

I have OC'd my 290's to 1200/1450 for benchmarking, but I mainly run them at stock clocks 24/7 (gives me more than enough performance anyways), so I'm not concerned at all. I could have gone with a cheaper quality 1000w bronze PSU, but decided to go with a top quality 850w gold unit instead (the best I could afford). The quality of the components used and the design of the unit also plays a significant roll in stability/longevity as well.

Besides that, I agree with you 100% - never skimp of the PSU. wink.gif

Ahem. Someone with an INTEL cpu has already shown that 2 290Xs can pull 1300w from the wall

Never realized people actually would look at that number when comparing gpu performance.
