It should cost me 80-90 bucks if i sell my 280X. I was thinking about waiting for Greenland, but i doubt i will be able to get anything better than a 290X performance wise within the 250-300 bucks range.

R9 290/290X will probably be mid-high tier GPU's when Greenland launchs. Just like the 280X now.

yes it is! i did the same from 280x to 290x

You might was to consider upgrading your PSU at the same time though. 520w is barely enough for a 290x at stock clocks. Minimum I would recommend is a good quality 650w gold unit.
520W is enough for a R9 290X. Usually most of them have 8+6 pin. That means MAX 300W draw. I have no problems with a 280X wich should take already 250W easily at stock. I usually clock it at 1150 MHz . Never had a problem. Not even with a 3570K.

amd has already stated they push the power boundaries

just an fyi

iirc tsm has a screenshot showing 2 290xs and his whole pc pulling 1300w from the wall ....

No it isn't. Will it run? Yes, for the most part but it's not ideal and it will significantly shorten the life of that PSU. 290x's will pull more than 300w. Don't go by the 8 and 6 pin ratings. Many high-end GPUs exceed those ratings even at stock clocks. The power draw of these GPUs is constantly being regulated and can draw momentary spikes of over 400w. A lower capacity PSU will have a much more difficult time trying to deal with those high load spikes and that's what will kill it sooner.

The PSU is the most important part of a PC and should not be compromised. Do yourself a favor; if you're going to upgrade to a 290x, then sell your 520w unit and use that money to help pay for a good quality unit with at least 650w and gold rated. Save your self the extra costs and headaches later on when that 520w unit starts to fail and possibly takes out other components with it. wink.gif

It's your system, you can do what you want, but I speak from experience and from doing A LOT of research about PSU's and GPU power draw characteristics. I STRONGLY recommend you upgrade your PSU if you install a 290x.

Whaddabout Crossfire? I'm running on stock right now but I'm thinking 1300-1600w for both GPU and CPU Stout OCing

I'm running an EVGA 850 GS with my 290 crossfire setup which is plenty. I've had both cards to 1200/1400 which it can handle just fine. But my CPU is a locked i5 (just a slight OC with a base clock bump) and I run my 290's at stock clocks 90% of the time anyways, so it's more than enough for me.

For any one looking to run crossfire 290's or 290x's and are planning to do some hefty OCing on both the GPUs and CPU, then I'd recommend at least a 1000w gold unit. 1200 is more than plenty and 1300+ I would say is excessive. wink.gif

It also depends on what else is in your system. How many HDD's? How many fans? Custom loop water cooling? Have to take that into account as well. wink.gif
