I am thinking if I got a case such as a Cooler Master HAF XB EVO (HAF XB Rev. 2) that has holes on the side my provide the good amount of air to the card. Just a though I am checking dimensions on that case at the moment.

It may make some difference however I do not think it will make as big of a difference as you think. Even then its a personal thing and as a water cooler my opinion will be different than an air cooler, however you asked so I will answer.

To me a GPU running at even 82c is too much, way too much. I would never allow a card to run that hot ever. I would personally not run a card over 70C and even that would be pushing it, However I am a spoiled water cooler whos reference 290s run at 42c under full load so take that with a grain smile.gif.

As to taking the panel off versus use a side that is vented, that is a huge difference. Venting will not make a large difference it may change by 1-3c and still be way unacceptable temps. You need to make an aggressive fan curve that is reality, it will sound like a jet engine with a proper curve, that is why you got it for 400.

Can you SS your fan curve for us and post it please. Also do me a favor, go into AB or whatever you use and force the fans to 100% then run heaven and see what temps you get.

I will once I get home today, but I did a run with 60% fan curve and still hit 94C and I stop the test. Once again it touch the side panel and is hot like crazy. I know I can cool this card out if I had direct cool air going to the fans and having the top pull the hot air out but I doubt it will work with this case because of that side panel and the way the fans are.

I will do what you asked once i am home and we can go from there. I another lay out I was thinking of would be something like this helping the air raise quicker will help the card?

At the worse case I may be looking at a LIAN LI PC-T60B Black Aluminum ATX / Micro-ATX TEST BENCH Computer Case LOL! biggrin.gif

You could be getting negative pressure going on here. Especially if all your fans have different fan curves. Try to put them all on a controller so the air is circulating correctly at the same speeds.

On another note, I thought these 290x's were safe up to 120C before it throttles....

Ya the 60% is the concern here, no matter what case you use 60% simply isn't going to cut it. It was the same song and dance as with the reference cards there fans need to be like 80-90% at load to get decent temps. At those speeds it is going to sound like a jet engine but that is simply the reality.

Umm no? the throttle for 295x2s is at 75c he is way past where that card should be running. Also in reviews that I have seen the Devil 13 loses to the reference 295x2 this is undoubtedly because of throttling.

A regular 290x has a throttle temp of 95c, maybe that's what you were talking about? even then 120 is a crazy number and no just no. at 120c the plastic would be melting lol.

Correction the 290x core TJ max is 95c, the 295x2s cores TJ max is 75c

I thought the new Radeons had a VRAM limit of 120c (that is what I was referring to)? But of course, we are talking about the core. The core will of course throttle at far lower temps than 120C.

Yep I had it confused with the TJ Max. 120C is the TJ. 95 is the throttle temp.

Ahh ya im not sure about the VRAM limits, I know the core will throttle at 95c on a regular 290x and the VRMS will at 85c on a 290, a 295x2 however seems to have lower max temps. At any rate he is saying his core is at 94c in heaven and BF4 that is beyond unacceptable.

He went on to say that with his case panel off in other games he keeps it at 82c that is still unacceptable. He needs to turn his fan curves way up, 60% simply isn't anywhere near enough that card should have never been air cooled to begin with. I know that the reference 290xs get a lot of hate due to running hot but honestly I think this thing is worse. I do know though when I was testing my cards before putting them under water it took 85% fan speed to keep them right at 95c, I wouldn't buy a reference to keep it on air.

Also @ITAngel "At the worse case I may be looking at a LIAN LI PC-T60B Black Aluminum ATX / Micro-ATX TEST BENCH Computer Case LOL!" no you dont need a bench your case is fine, the issue is your settings. You seem to think that below and at 60% fan speed is enough well it is not. It is not even close to enough, this is why you think the card is quiet and everyone says it isnt. You have to have those fans running a whole lot faster than you are.

When they told you before to set an aggressive fan profile, 60% at max is not an aggressive fan profile, an aggressive fan profile means them fans hit 100% to keep that card under 80c. Set the minimum fan speed at 40% at like 60c then the Maximum at 75c to 100% fan speed.

Use the money you saved on the card for a set of really nice really loud headphones because you are going to need them.

I see, I will set those profile tonight however I felt that the air 540 kept my 290x lightning overclock cooled. I may go the haf xb or air 540 route.

The lightning has a good cooler and is a fairly cool running card. the Devil 13 is not a quiet card its not a cool running card. They air cooled a card that was made to be water cooled they took a leap and made a bad design. It sucks that the card will run hot and loud but that is the facts.

Honestly if noise is a concern you need to look at a different GPU that is sadly the reality that card will not be quiet and run correctly ever. All the cases in the world wont change that, you have to have an aggressive fan profile and its going to be very very loud.

Yeah, Gerry-rig (I can say that because of my German ancestry - So it's not an ethnic slur)

Are you talking about CLC's, or OLC's, or both?
