If you don't believe me about the 295 throttling to protect the pump, come ask in the 295 thread.
I know, I have quad 290x and 2 295s

Okay first thing is first. A 295x2 is AMDs name for a dual 290x card, anycard that has dual 290x gpus follows AMDs designs plans of a 295x2. 295x2 is the reference cards name nothing more, they can call it whatever they want it is still a 295x2.

"and they are not the same the devil 13 was also released earlier then a 295x2 " No it wasn't, nor could it be GPU partners dont just start making cards, if AMD doesn't make a Dual GPU reference design then board partners do not make one period. Same thing with Nvidia, Amd and Nvidia make the cards those are your reference models, then they allow certain changes to be made from board partners. I do not know where you are getting this but its incorrect. Below is the dates for you.

295x2 - April 21, 2014
Devil 13 - around June 15,14

"If power color made them throttle so low that is due to them. " You are right I suppose they could have edited in there custom bios, however they did not nor did Asus AFAIK.

"If you don't believe me about the 295 throttling to protect the pump," again I dont need to ask anyone, what you are saying doesn't pan out for anyone that knows anything about liquid cooling. If your GPUs are at 75c your water is more like 30c a pump can operate upwards of 50c your water is not hitting anywhere near 50c.

These steps i do to both my amd and intel. but, like i said before, i normally just install the new over the old after steps 1 & 2. i followed the steps above for crimson and omega.

Umm I am 90% sure a gpu will still get power and still be recognized with just the 6 pins removed. As a mater of fact it would have to be or your idea would not work. As we both pointed out to you already it doesnt work that way.

If you have 1 card installed and try to add a second without reinstalling drivers it will not work, SLI does but CFX does not. Both cards have to be installed at the time of the driver install to unlock CF ability's. I ran into this when I got my second 290x as I did not know this and for days couldn't get CFX to work, I asked here and TSM told me that.

I do agree about the removing Water Cooled cards thing sucks though I love that my RIVBE can shut off PCIE lanes with switches best feature ever!.

I believe that you're going through extra, unnecessary, steps ..

First of all...

1. Uninstall the old drivers... This, in itself, will disable CrossFire
2. Make sure that all the GPU's are mounted and plugged in, start the system,
3. Install the new drivers, reboot, CrossFire should be picked up automatically, go to work!!!!

Sometimes, I'll even do a fresh install of the OS

The biggest issue is what we already told him, he isnt plugging the second card in until after the drivers are installed, CF doesnt work that way he has to have both cards installed for the CF drivers to install.

That's my way. Never had driver issue. At least with the games i play. no flickering, no lost of signal, no fluctuating gpu usage, no clocks not going back to idle. I never had a driver crash except oc'ing too much like 1330 core. lol

For the next whql, i will just install the new driver over the old. but, still, i will disable crossfire.

@Cyber, once i plug the other 290 and boot . . . Crimsom/CCC will set crossfire by itself, which it did when i installed hotfix.

not the overclock capability, but the image scaler/output becomes sensitive to voltage, as in: the screen loses sync every other second.
This is "normal" with freesync, but one of my cards is doing this over hdmi, and now over DVI as well.

display port craps it self above stock vcore. HMDI above 150mv, and DVI above 190mv. Its not gpu frequency (mhz) but vcore. Set the card at 1000mhz and increase the vcore until the screen loses sync.

This same card gave no problems at all 7 months ago.

This is a fairly well known issue with some cards, particularly when running high refresh rates, but I havent heard of this getting worse over time. We are just beginning to discuss this on the Hawaii BIOS modding thread.

Also, my card, which has this issue will drop any of the outputs at similar voltages

That is because the driver is seeing another card. Even with your 6 and 8 pins unplugged AMDs drivers can still see the card, if you completely removed the card or shut off the lane it was in, then that would not happen. When you install the drivers there is a version for single cards and a version for CF cards, The driver chooses which one by looking how many cards are in your system. It is stupid and you should just be able pop a card in and go but in my experience that is not the case.

crap in ones water, if the cores on the 295x2s could reach 95 like normal 290/290x then the water could SATURATE and get to 75, ( seriously have you seen how crappy asecrap is ?) again

Here ya go: http://www.overclock.net/t/1540259/r9-295x2-rad-fan-shootout/0_50

The SP120's do quite well, i'm running a couple of Noctua iPPC NF-F12's on mine and the Cougar's should perform well too smile.gif

Thanks smile.gif

Oh, also is there a way to disable the red LED?

Yes!

Under the shroud you can unplug the LED's power cable, taking off the shroud is quite easy and will not void your warranty smile.gif

The LED has its own power cable? +1 AMD.
It really annoys me launching and having to install the bloatware that is known as GF Experience JUST to turn off the LED on my GTX 690.

Coming from Nvidia's "best" dual GPU to AMD's best. I really am going to be interested to see the difference redface.gif
One thing I love that almost no reviews seem to mention is the customizability of the cooling - simply change out the fans for different ones.

I heard/read that the 295X2 has a thermal throttle of 75'c - whereas the 290Xs have a higher throttle (85'c?). Seeing as how the R9 295X2 should have binned 290X cores - surely the thermal throttle is just for the AIO cooler / heat / power draw. Is it safe going beyond it (with a BIOS flash on the one BIOS to disable it)?

Purely for benchmarking, I will be running this thing stock 24/7 otherwise redface.gif

here is the cable:

And yeah, the 295x2 throttles at 75c due to the amount of heat the pump can withstand afaik, the 290x has a throttle point of 95c.

i have the Sapphire OC Bios flashed onto my card and it runs quite well, haven't tried any hard benching but with the stock Bios i managed 1150/1625 with +100mV in Afterburner.

With the Sapphire Bios i can go up to +300mV in Sapphire Trixx.....waiting for cooler weather though tongue.gif

since you wont ask

@wermad @Sgt Bilko and anyone else

under 295x2s you cant
http://www.powercolor.com/us/products_search_VGA.asp?Bus=&Generation=RADEON+R9+295X2&Series=&MemerySize=&MemoryInterface=&ByIntention=&ByUniqueFeature=&submit=Search

crap in ones can not be compared to WATER COOLING

crap in ones water, if the cores on the 295x2s could reach 95 like normal 290/290x then the water could SATURATE and get to 75, ( seriously have you seen how crappy asecrap is ?) again
since you wont ask

@wermad @Sgt Bilko and anyone else

Dude a 295x2 is a dual 290x GPU, a Devil 13 is a Dual 290x GPU they are the same thing! Powercooler Devil 13, and Asus Ares are both 295x2s.....

They can call it whatever they want it is still a non reference 295x2.

I wont ask because I do not need to ask, anyone that thinks a card needs to be throttled at 75c to prevent damaging a pump that can handle up to a 50c water temp needs to go back to school. A core temp of 75 is no where near a water temp of 50c. If the water was to get 50c the barbs wont hold on the tube must less pump concerns.

BTW a 7970s max temp is 95c however a 7990s is 85c, I guess they did that to protect the pump that doesn't exist on that card huh?.

The driver can not see that you have the second card unplugged because it polls the operating system and guess what with the power unplugged try and find it in device manager....not happening...if somehow it did know it was there it would give crossfire as an option after installing drivers with one installed and powered and the other unplugged...also if in fact there are two versions of the driver as cyber stated why does crossfire work immediately when you install a new card on the same drivers or when you plug it back up after clean installing with it unplugged? Can you explain cyber or anyone who believes this?

295x2 uses the same Hawaii cores as the 290x yes but they aren't the same, the Ares and Devil reads under GPU-Z as Crossfire (Hawaii) 290x's, the 295x2 doesn't, it reads as Vesuvius and Crossfire cannot be disabled on it (major difference there)

the 75c throttle temp is to prevent damage to the pump, the Devil obviously doesn't need that (being air cooled) and the Ares should never get close to that (EK waterblock).

and iirc the throttle temp on the 7990 was because of the vrm's proximity to the core.

but hey, AMD are stupid I guess......I mean why intentionally throttle the card if they didn't have to?
