Hey Mates!
Just got an used PowerColor 290x with waterblock and Visiontek bios.
It's scoring low in benchs, but doesn't shows artefacts or this kind of issue.
Noticed a low value for physics test CPU and a high value for loading time(ms) on Catzilla.
Can it be CPU to VGA communication issue?

Does this log values looks acceptable?

Or I just got a lemon? frown.gif

We normally compare Firestrike scores (Graphics) or Heaven 4.0. Hard to tell with that bench.

Welcome.

Edit: Use settings found here . . .

http://www.overclock.net/t/1235557/official-top-30-heaven-benchmark-4-0-scores

Your cpu will definitely hold back the gpu. Pretty well known.

Hey, thanks for the prompt answer.
I'm wondering to go for a 8350. But this cpu low scores, less than half of a 8350, also made me think about the motherboard.
Also got low scores on 3dmark, unigine, aquamark. frown.gif

Top of the page is the Rigbuilder. Fill it out if you get a chance.

Not knowing the rest of your rig like psu . . . it is hard to tell if it is just the cpu. Your graphics score is quite low. i know of some Powercolor had an issue of under performing Hawaiis, so they put out a Bios to fix it. A stock 290X should be getting above 11K in Graphics score in FS.

Even your Heaven score is low for a bench that relies less on the cpu. At 1030 core you should be scoring close if not over 60.

About the cpu, yes, the best and cheapest route is an 8300 chip.

Thanks Mate. I'll fill it up.
The board came with Visiontek bios. The PSU is a 7team ST-750ZAF.
Would it be that bad luck to catch two lemons in a row? frown.gif

Umm, that psu is over 7 years old and was mediocre the day it was released. Ya I would say that defiantly needs replacing.

3) Stock

Hopefully it's okay to ask here (if not please point me in the right direction if you don't mind) but what are some good aftermarket coolers for the R9 290X?
Right now I have a stock cooler and while it does it's job, things do get a little toasty and I'd like a little more overclocking headroom.
Preferably I'm looking for a self-contained unit that doesn't require me to have my own custom loop (because I don't have one yet)

I purchased an Arctic Accelero Hybrid III-140 and what a difference! XFX can kiss my behind about their DD cooler. tongue.gif

This is my card running Furmark with the stock DD cooler:

And this is running Furmark with the Arctic Accelero Hybrid III-140:

One thing to note: The kit does not provide ANY cooling for the VRM2 chips. My first run showed the VRM2's going (about) 6C hotter than the stock DD cooler. So I put a 140mm intake fan in the bottom of my R5 case and that was enough to blow some air over the VRM2 chips and keep the temps down.

Amazon was selling them for $99 (Prime) but they are now out of stock on the 290 version. Their is a 3rd party vendor who is trying to get $294 thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Arctic does sell this cooler on their website for $129 (140mm) radiator and $119 (120mm radiator) + shipping.

Last point: Installing this cooler (by yourself) is a royal PITA! If I ever have to do this again, I will have a friend over to help.

I had that happen long ago however it was a weak card, a gtx 430 that I used for testing boards. I put it in a HTPC without its cables hooked up by accident, it worked it displayed and was read in device manager however when under load it would crash which is what lead me to figure out I forgot the cables. Of course that is a completely different card with way less power reqs the same thing could be happening here.

As I stated previously " there are two different versions of AMD drivers in every install (allegedly)" I dont know that that is just a guess. What I do know is that if you install drivers and try to add a second without reinstalling it does not work. At least it didn't for me or the 100s of people that have threads about the exact same issue, along with the other guy that said something about before I did.

Know could this issue just be a certain set of drivers every now and then ya its possible. Could it work sometimes and not others that is also possible. Did it not for me and many many others, Yes.
Could installing a fresh driver versus installing a driver over another change the way that works yes.
I always do clean installs I didn't used to but amd drivers have shown me the error of my ways...neither of my 290s will show up in device manager or sync to a display without being powered via power supply...this includes each by themselves individually and together...or with both installed but one powered
