So I am looking to move to a new BIOS. I had an elpida based R9 290x that was not too friendly to overclocking well I was able to sell it off to a buddy of mine who has no idea what overclocking is but wanted to replace his aging 5850 card. So far this card is VERY friendly to overclocking I have been able to get it up to 1200Mhz Core and 1550Mhz on the Memory and only needing +150mv. I want to push it farther and make it better. I have a Kraken G10 attached to a H90 I made sure to get the GELID Vrm coolers so my VRMS are frosty as for the memory I went out and picked up 2 packs of the Enzotech copper Memory coolers. So far my temps have been VERY good and I want to see how much more I can squeeze out of this card and wondering if any of you guys had any good BIOSes for Hynex memory. I tried to use one of the BIOSes I used on my Elpidia card that was supposed to support Hynex also but I would BSOD as soon as I tried to install the drivers so it looks like I need a new BIOS. Anyone here have a suggestion I am looking to use this card for gaming until the Launch of the R9 4XX series (I didn't see the Fury X as big enough so I am waiting a Gen)

Thank you all in advance biggrin.gif

P.S I have a 750W PSU so power is not too much of a problem

I don't know if another BIOS is going to help you too much but, there are some interesting things going on with VRAM timings and Straps in the Hawaii BIOS editing thread so you may have better luck asking there:  http://www.overclock.net/t/1561372/hawaii-bios-editing-290-290x-295x2-390-390x/0_20

I don't have any experience with BIOS altering on these cards, but I do have plenty of experience OCing and altering cooling means on them.

I was one of the first to test out that Gelid VRM kit and while it does work pretty well for moderate clocks and voltages, I'm wondering what you're considering 'frosty' for VRM1 temps with +150mV running through them?

I squeezed every bit of capability out of the Kraken/Gelid combination with a fan/thermal pad upgrade, and VRM1 would be in low 50's after a couple hours gaming at stock settings.  Before I changed the pads and fan it was low 70s at stock settings. I could be mistaken, but with +150mV I don't think your temperatures would be that great unless you have some extravagant airflow happening over them.  80C-90C is about as high as you want to run them on a regular basis, after that you are asking for trouble.

As far as your current overclock is concerned +150mV for 1200/1550 is fair.  Are you running +50% on the power slider as well?

Since you only have another +50mV to go I don't think there is a whole lot of room left for your GPU to stretch its proverbial legs.  Additionally, ~1200MHz core is when the Hawaii GPUs begin to see diminishing returns for performance gains.

My 290 sits rock steady at 1200/1500 +100mV +50% power and it will run upwards of 1300/1700 if pushed to the brink.  However, after doing lots of benching and some simple calculations I figured I was getting a very large majority of my performance without maxing the card out.

These benchmark numbers are old, but they should serve their purpose for trying to make a point:

While there is nothing wrong with pushing your hardware...'cuz this is OCN and that's the name of the game...it does have its effects over time.  The point being that finding a happy medium of settings means longer life, less (chance of) degradation, cooler temps, and quieter operation.

Another thought is your CPU settings and RAM.  If your rigbuilder is correct you have a FX-8350 with a Hyper 212 cooler and 1600MHz RAM.

I know the 212 is a decent cooler, but the FX are toasty little buggers especially with some volts/OC.  If you're not running an OC there, or a small one, an AIO and more MHz for the CPU could help.

Also, many modern games are taking advantage of system RAM speeds much more than they used to. 1600Mhz used to be OK, but around 2133 is a much better place to be.

Hello, I have gigabyte 290 oc . It's not brand new but second hand, when I installed it in my pc, I tested it with 3d mark. I'm surprise with the fan sound, it's very loud (compare to my old HD 7870). And the temperature is high to. Is it normal if idle temperature is 45-47 C, and load about 83 C? I'm not playing with any game yet.

What's your ambient temp? That seems kinda high.....

I don't have tool to measure my room temperature. But 83 C at load is with the side panel opened. If the side panel installed, the load temperature rise to 87 C

That is quite high for an idle, and the load is a little high as well especially if the card is running at stock clocks?  Are you overclocked with additional voltage?

If you're comfortable with pulling the cooler off the card I would check to see how the thermal paste looks and try some fresh paste on there and see what happens.

Do you have a picture of the card?  Is it a reference or does it have the WindForce cooler on it?

If it's the windforce cooler I believe they are normally pretty quiet in general, they fans might be going out if the card has seen a lot of use with the fans forced to higher RPMS to keep the temperatures down.

WOW edited this was the wrong thread hehehe.

While I am here though, figured I would mention a friend asked me how much used 290s are going for atm and figured I would let everyone here now. they are going to 250+ ATM on ebay ect which is way way higher than they have ever been (which is stupid) so if you were planning to sell now is the time.

How can I recover from an unstable overclock set via after burner to start at startup?

I've tried opening misconfig in safe mode, but can't see it..

Typing on phone now, which is further adding to the rage lol
post #41770 of 43909
Boot into safe mode, delete your card's profile in AB (\Program Files\MSI Afterburner\Profiles\) and use DDU to swipe the driver and reinstall it
Also if you use the Crimson driver (15.12 ~ 16.1.1), this may be the cause, it has been reported that the driver don't remember or apply the "OC" voltage at startup.
Roll back to 15.7.1 or 15.11.1 if its the case
