Its not that unheard of. Its like the boy raking up leaves complaining about trees but in reality the trees are making him money. I complain about equipment at my job but in reality i love the fact it needs lots of repairs cause ya know job security ;-)

When the 290x came out it was competitive with what from Nvidia?

What was the competition? The GTX 780ti and the Titan?

And how long did the 780ti hold its own against the 290x as drivers matured?

Then the 980 came out right? And beat the 290x for a while right? Then drivers continued to mature and the 290x ended up besting it on 4k (at least) correct me if I'm wrong?

390x came out and didn't really compete with the 980 but in the end it is beating it now, especially on 4k and DX12 where it even competes with the 980ti correct? Seems to me like AMD is really adding some serious value to their customers while Nvidia does anything but create value for products already purchased...

So why do some have so much allegiance to Nvidia? Seems they are bleeding enthusiasts of all their money to me and shooting all of them in the face while laughing the entire time.

290X came out 6 months after Titan OG and 3 months after GTX780. It was faster than both and cheaper then both. Problem was you had a 290X with a crappy stock cooler going up against GTX780s with amazing aftermarket cooler. No idea why AMD did not release this card with custom coolers off the bat. I hope they do it like 390X. All the cards starting R9 290 to GTX980 are in the same ballpark.

Yeah, which is my point. AMD really hit it out of the park with the Hawaii series. The 290x cards are still quite awesome and hold their own against the 980ti on DX12 which is going to be the new standard on games. Its hard not to like a brand that treats its customers like this. (meaning good)

And hard not to take a small offense at what Nvidia has been up to lately.

I just sold my 970 as a result of how Nvidia has been treating us... ie, (me). 970 RAM was a bad enough deal, but I'm just done with them ruining their old cards by bringing new cards out that are only marginally better and offering no real driver support (for past generation cards) that lasts more than about 6-8 months. Its a joke and a never ending upgrade cycle that is just plain annoying to me.

I get you need to make money, but I sincerely hope AMD can do a repeat on the 290x.

AMD releasd the 290/X to counter the 780/Titan. Both neck and neck at the time. On stock reference coolers with throttling issues due to heat.

nVidia released the 780TI with better specs sans memory size over the Titan. Beating reference 290Xs. They then released the 980/970 and removed the 780/TI off the map. At the time, reviewers are still comparing them to ref blowers 200 series cards. That, along with the fact that 780/TI vs 970/980 aren't really worthy upgrades -- but a mere effort by nVidia to attract customers saying, 1500MHz OC Clocks! -- (well, they have to go that far to justify the 700 to 900 series as an upgrade) and people were easily attracted.

But nVidia moved on from there. 980TI cannot be matched by any single AMD card except DX12/compute. But everything with current games is dominated by nVidia. Let's just hope Vega fixes that.

Regarding DX12, nVidia probably has more than enough money to pay game devs to delay full DX12 transition. Which benefits them quite big time.

So it looks like msi is taking care of my dead 290x lightning says Your RMA has been received and is now in replacement, testing, or repair process. If they do replace it if it cant be repaired whats the chance of getting another 290x lightning back?

Cause i really don't think i should accept any non lightning cards that's a 390x or under..

Im really hopeing they do have a extra 290x lightning because i had no problems in any game with that card... If they manage to fix it that would be great too.

Got a reference R9 290 for $180 CAD. Have no waterblocks.

Already modded a Gigabyte Windforce cooler so it will hopefully fit. I took off 20% of the fins and hammered the heat pipes to give it more clearance.

Pics coming in a few hours if I don't lose an eye or something.
