I will wait for the 480 reviews, only to see a glimpse of the big boss Vega. I miiiiiight get a 4 GB 470 since they would be really cheap. i really hope there is a low profile version of this, it would make for one of the most powerful and low power HTPC cards. if not, just to have a Polaris chip on the cheap.

Eh, i want them for BOINC. Don't really think i can get them under true water, but on compute power alone they should be beasts in their own right.

Interesting thing with GCN4's efficiency, is vega may have as much as 5,120 + 80 shaders, GPUs are getting pretty riddick...

Also that there are now methods to achieve near-linear scaling across multiple GPUs...

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if someone can provide me with some advice. Long story short. I am having black screen issues with my 290x anytime I raise the voltage via MSI AB. The card will still be rendering in the back ground but the screen will be black. I ran 2 cables to the card. 1 for the 6 pin and 1 for the 8 pin connector thinking 1 cable for both was not enough juice.

This run was made looking at a black screen. stock clocks but voltage raised to max. Latest drivers, stock core/mem clocks.

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9010618

This is what the card use to do with no black screens.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/10487940

Not sure if this is driver related, card related or what. I if run the benchmark at stock voltage I have no issues. Please advise.

Edit: I am monitoring voltage via OSD. The card gets a constant 1.227V, VRM temperatures and core temps are all under 48 degrees since the card is under water.

How much voltage is added til it Black Screens?

Are you doing the MSI AB Voltage hack to get the Voltage past +100mV ?

The issue is common on these cards when you push the Voltage. Some cards do that earlier than the others. It's just luck. The only remedy is a Hard Mod.

we're talking about the 0.95 Rail mods.

If you have 2 cards, use the one that doesn't black screen as the primary when doing XFire. That way, you won't lose the signal.

How many watts/amps are going through the VRMs? The common cause of black-screening when overvolting is simply due to exceeding the card's full TDP, which is very easy to do most of the time. A possible fix is to flash a patched BIOS that overrides the TDP limit, however runs the risk of destroying the card.

errmmm..

I have been doing my crazy OC's on unmodded BIOSes sans Voltage limit and they don't, again, THEY DON'T LIMIT my OCs. thumb.gif

You have 50% Power Limit more to push when overclocking, you should know.

Agreed. I never changed the TDP / power limit in the bios on my 290X, and it clocked to 1300+ pretty easy.

It seems anything above +30mv's starts giving me intermittent black screens. I have resorted to just unplugging my second card cause most scaling is horrible and I encounter too many problems to mess with all of the time. I normally dont overclock on a day 2 day bases. I remember these cards overvolting way better just 6 months ago.

Not sure what wattage is being pushed through but everything is staying well within design in regards to the temperatures. Not sure what TDP limits are on this card...

Agreed, use to be able to turn up the voltage with no issues too. Most I have ever got is 1225MHz on the core with very little artifact.

X2

This is a bench I just ran with black screen coming in and out. No crashes as it was still rendering while the screen was black.

My understanding is that these cards can be over volted to 1.4-1.5V under water....

Just did this run with +0mv and power limit set to +50% with no black screens and core clock at 1050MHz.

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/12777114

Not sure if AB is causing any issues. I do remember there was a 1.3v soft mod you can do on afterburner but not sure it works on AMD cards as I use to do it on my GTX 770's...
When's the last time you repasted the cards?

Would you be inclined to check for the VRM temps?

If they have no issues with temps, paste is fresh, do a DDU, and reinstall your driver.

I have 2 cards that does that when I add +300ish mV. And one that doesn't blink til around +381mV. I put that in as the primary and didn't have to worry about Black Screens.
