I have a 390 now and I can honestly say, you will love it. Pair it with the new driver and you'll never miss the 290X.

Except if your lightning can do over 1300Mhz which I doubt without watercooling.

1200MHz 390 can hang with a 1300MHz 290. On same drivers. Once you go with the latest Crimson, well.....

http://www.overclock.net/t/1561704/official-amd-r9-390-390x-owners-club/9900_50#post_25339680

yep had the 390 for weeks now

Yea max i put threw my lighting was 1200-1650 with around 200+ than i had to keep going lower over time because everything was getting unstable i guess the card was about to die and just took longer to do it..

For the 390 i didn't really push it to the max yet cause yea temps got out of control.. more than my lightning... i had it on 1180 core -1720mhz and everything seem fine than the temps got out of hand and went in the 90s even on max fan.... So at the moment i been at mostly stock ever sense i saw those temps lol

Performance its hard to say really but i do like that i can turn stuff up now in games and using vsr that needs alot of vram with out taking a huge performance hit,
Haven't did much testing on the new drivers tho but i do have them installed so will see. going to start clocking it up again and see what the temps do again.

But yea i do really miss the cooling the lightning had cause even with +200 and at 1200-1600 i never saw 90s frown.gif

But here's the thing that bothers me about this card not sure if they all do this or what.

But if i overclock the memory even over 1mhz over 1500mhz it will go full vcore from 1086 voltage to 1234mv..... and it stays that way than if i load a game up it will drop lower than 1234 around 1172...

If i keep it at stock 1500 voltage will stay at 1086 always than when i load something up it will go to 1172-1180.

now if i up the core the voltage will stay were its at till i put some more into it..

Never remember my 290x doing this..

Your lightning probably did the same and you didn't notice, when the memory has to run at its high clocks (3D use and/or multi-monitor) it forces the core to its highest as the memory controller uses the same rail. However if it sticks to the highest core voltage when both the core and memory are running at their lowest idle state then there's a bug with the software you're using (or a miss-configured BIOS).

the weird thing is the memory runs always at 1500 cause i do have dual monitor but the voltage is not running high till i overclock the memory even by 1mhz.. why would 1mhz cause it to go in high voltage mode even tho the memory is running at full clock already?

290 with 390 modded ROM. I'm seeing the same thing. For what it's worth, voltage for DPM7 (highest pstate) was set to 1.287V with +37.5mV hidden offset in the BIOS, meaning highest voltage at highest pstate is ~1.325V. I don't know what is going on but probably drivers automatically increase the voltage when it detect overclocking, even if it's only 1MHz.

Please don't ask me to test with stock/290 ROM because I don't want to do that. redface.gif

Seems that the BIOS and/or drivers anticipate that the core may run unstable above the stock 1500 at a low voltage, as to what is expected, but stable with a low voltage at or below the stock 1500 when idling.

So you'll either want to not use multi-monitor or edit the BIOS's power profiles, or just leave it as-is if you don't mind the slightly higher idle power.

Few months ago I tried to reproduce my top score and failed:
http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/2873251/fs/7876016

I took some time to investigate whats wrong with my PC.

a) CPU VRM isnt really happy
Graphic card as a secondary heat source is too close to VRM coolers and results is problem with CPU power supply above certain frequency (4000 Mhz).

b) One memory timing went wrong.
2nd set of tests was running with memory setting 1600MHz 6-6-6-18 and 1,77v. These settings are OK, but due some reason one of the timing which was previously set to AUTO and was fine, changed from 34 to 40. The timing has proven to be too long as system was able to reboot without any apparent reason. setting it back to 34 fixed it.

c) Power setting
Due some reason the system was thinking its et to 0% and not 50%.

Actually I am considering to get Asus Sabertooth. Yes now when Phenom II is so old biggrin.gif

So... Step by step...

1. I will restore 3900MHz on CPU and RAM timings. to 6-6-6-18
And take time to check wheter system is stable or not..

2. Then I will try GPU oc.
If there will be artifacts on 1180MHz we are still in trouble.
Hard to tell what's happening there. Different Drivers may do that as well as the rest of the settings in your OC.

Pretty surprised of the GS1 score on the old driver though.
So...
http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9338552/fs/2873251

But there are artifacts on the first test.

Anyway CPU and MEM settings are now fine. At least we are getting somewhere. Anyway it seems that the old driver was somehow better. And I didnt used any kind of dirty tricks like running low texture quality.

In any case, from 1x R9-290x + Phenom II 1090t nobody (including me) beaten my old record with valid drivers. I will give a weekend to it smile.gif

Hey guys haven't been on here for a few years, but just wanted to update. I have a 290 flashed to 290x running stable at 1110 core (+50mv) and 1450mhz clock. The only problem is running at these settings, while my games never crash, windows will not resume from sleep. Has anyone found a solution for this? Again I did this unlock right when this mod was out a few years ago, so Im waaaaay out of the loop. The card works perfect under stock conditions BTW 1000/1350.
I don't see a reason why the card/OC will do that. Unless sleeping the computer resets the Voltage causing the card to blackscreen due to memory OC.

That is the thing with Crimson Drivers resuming form a shut down keeping the previous Overclocks -- minus the Voltages.

Try installing a pre-Crimson Driver and see if the PC resumes from sleep normally. If it does,

Read thru Hawaii Bios Editting Thread and look for a way to apply a hidden Offset to the BIOS. That way, Voltage Offset will be applied at startup instead of waiting for you to run MSI AB or OC Software to adjust the Voltage. This will teick Crimson Driver issues like Black Screen at startup after a Windows / OC failure.

The difference from Applying an in-ROM offset to setting up a profile that starts at startup with OC software is that, the driver reads the BIOS first that usually starts as soon as Windows loads. Not after Windows has been fully initiated with Software OC tools.
