After seeing some one mistakenly flash a 780ti with a titan bios, and have it only read 2688 cores (should read 2880) i'm guessing it can go both ways. Just a thought for those thinking they have unlocked the defective/defused sections of their 290s.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? I'm guessing its a capacitor thats about to pop...

My'n is super loud.. Its quited down alittle bit, but not enough to not notice.. I can hear it across the house when i have something running.. It also doesnt matter what fps a game or a bench is running.. if its at 40fps its just slower ticking noise, at 140fps its just a screeching screaming loud as hell sound.. Sucks, big time. I really wanted to put a aftermarket cooler on it, but now im just going to wait till the 25th to rma.. I guess though if you say you want to rma it because of a coil whine, they wont let you.. So luckly one of my dvi's has a flicker every now and again and well i cant have that now can i..

If it is a good overclocker then I would just deal with it. I have had motherboard, power supplies and several video cards that do this. Sometimes it is a combination of certain parts. My Sapphire 2GB 5870 causes my King Win PF-850 (known for whining) to make noises on startup and shutoff but no other card I have makes the PSU make any noises but... when it was connected to my RIIIE motherboard it would always whine.

So if you can just deal with it but if it is a bad overclocker then I think you have a good enough reason to request an exchange from whoever you got it from.

If your psu is making noises every now and again that might mean its ready to pop... That just cant be right.. For your psu to do it only when you have that card in or mobo pluged in.. There is something going on there. Maybe just an unhappy coil..

Coil whine is quite part for the course when it comes to AMD GPU's, and for some PSU's... It rarely means something is about to "pop" unless you are on an extremely low wattage and or low build quality unit.

Many companies will accept RMA request for coil whine, though most of them will tell you that they can not guarantee the next one won't do it.

If you are lucky, & or old enough you stop hearing it. biggrin.gif

Hey guys, I'm looking into getting 3 r9-290s and have read through most of the comments but cant get a sense of if the black screen issue has been solved and whether it is hardware or software based....

Before I pull the trigger on 2000 dollars worth of gear (including waterblocks), I just wanted to ensure that I wont be disappointed with my purchase.

To be fair even the GTX 780's have coil whine, it is not exclusive to AMD.

Also Moojbear, I am getting another 290x tomorrow, so if it crashes I will say its more than likely something driver/software based on the user end, so I'll let ya know. The odds would be pretty crazy for me to get two bum cards in a row. My gut feeeling is, it is the mobo's not supplying enough voltage to the PCIe slots for these cards or bad ram on some cards. So in short, if the card tomorrow crashes, I am going to see if I can return this mobo, and get one of the ROG ones that have extra power cables for the PCIe slots.

Hi, i'm in ?

After a poor sample of sapphire, i've changed with a gigabyte card (290 non-x)

Hynix memory chip!!! No warranty sticker :-)
290x bios : none modification of shaders.
For now, voltage control with AB doesn't work, OCguruII either. But took back the hand on, with the asus 290 bios and gputweak.

When I was running the gtx285s regularly those things would scream, came in handy when walking away from the rig while folding or benching, when I stopped hearing the coil whine it was an audible indicator that the driver had crashed tongue.gif
