As a matter of fact, the heat caused the thermal pads to fail and all 3 heatsinks fell off! I didn't want to go with the permanent glue, and here's why I'm glad I didn't:Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Good job. man.
If Aquatuning keep postponing the waterblock, I might consider something like this (that is: if the AX III ever comes back in stock here in the NL at shops)
I wonder, do you have a good picture of the heatsink and alu fins as they were before you cut them up?
What you see there is the result of 2 hours of quality time spent with a hacksaw! Yes, a HACKSAW. I don't own a rotary tool, and my local hardware stores were closed when I started around 9:30 PM.
Essentially, I took inspiration from some folks at Overclockers UK for the VRM1 heat and got to work on the stock heatsink! The back plate covering VRM1 was the easy part (thanks OCUK). On the other hand, the VRM2 plate up front was much more difficult. I had to work my way through the black plate, the copper plate, and finally the aluminum fins. Once I got the VRM2 cover separated from the rest of the sink, I used a pair of pliers to individually tear off the aluminum fins.
Told you it was crazy!
Now here comes some gritty:Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Pretty sweet results, right? If you've made it this far, thanks for checking out my work!
I'd really like to know what you other R9 290(X) owners think of this Frankenstein of a mod, the results, and what other benches would be good to tax this monstrosity!
Also, if anyone is interested in more details about how I wound up with the VRM2 plate you see in the pics (where to cut, etc), I'll be happy to share.
Edit: Forgot to mention my idles
