Socket temps are holding back my overclock.

Im trying to get my 8350 up to 4.7 or 4.8ghz but it appears my socket temps may put a stop to that. My core temps are spectacular, usually never breaking 50c, but my socket temps are pretty atrocious. @ 4.7ghz w/ 1.4v the socket temp reaches 76c within about 3 minutes of IBT and then throttles my CPU down to 1.4ghz. The core temps are usually around 47c when the throttling kicks in. I even rigged up a spare 140mm fan to blow directly onto the VRM heatsink but no dice. Still get throttled.

Is there anything else I can do to get those temps down? Or am I going to be stuck at 4.6 for all of eternity?

Try putting a small fan behind you mobo tray aiming at the socket and vrm area. This brought my temps down 10c on my 8120 with an Asus M5A99FX R.2 mobo. If you dont have a small fan try a big fan but just leave the back of your case off. smile.gif

Thanks for the tip, chase. Reading that reminded me that I had a Scythe slim 120mm fan laying around unused, so I slipped that behind the motherboard tray sitting directly behind the socket and that seemed to have helped significantly thumb.gif I ran about 20 runs of IBT and the socket only got up to around 70-71c and no more throttling! More importantly, no more throttling while im encoding either.

I think I might be able to get to 4.7 with this setup but probably no further. I have that same motherboard you mentioned and man does it run screaming hot..
