What resolution are you running? In most cases core OC provides more of a boost over memory OC.

You will have better luck getting help if you use a more descriptive title.

With that said, core clock and memory both help when gaming, though it depends on the graphics card you use as well as the games you intend to play.

im running a gygabyte radeon hd 7870 OC 2 GB on an i3 3240 at the moment

only games i have are far cry 3 and sleeping dogs and they work fine with my GPU standard

although bf4 and modern warfare ( my 2 favs ) will be out soon

and im just wondering if it would be worth my while OCing my card so that i can get the best out of those games aswell

You're going to be CPU limited, not GPU limited in those games with your setup - The CPU is going to bottleneck the 7870 even at stock GPU clocks in a game like BF4. OCing the CPU (if possible) or upgrading the CPU would be the best course of action. Overclocking the GPU will be a waste of time, as the CPU is what's holding back the FPS.

Also, a better thread title would be appreciated by the members here on OCN thumb.gif

Yeah just save your time/frustration with overclocking the GPU until you have a CPU which can allow the GPU to "stretch its legs" a bit.

The new consoles are 8 cores so we're going to be seeing more and more games taking advantage of multithreaded processors. A lot of people on OCN kept spewing out garbage about how PC games wouldn't make use of more than 2-4 cores for years to come as early as ~6 months or so ago... Obviously those people were dead wrong and gave a lot of users (like yourself) the idea that they could play all of the latest PC games at respectable frame rates with dual core processors.

Many people who took that advice bought the quad core i5's and a number of those i5 owners are wishing they had saved up for i7's due to their HyperThreading ability which can make them act as eight core CPU's - I'm sure you can see how this could be to a gamers' advantage when playing upcoming titles which will be coded for the 8 core consoles.. The i5's don't have HT so they're limited to 4 cores, but 4 cores overclocked should be "good enough" if you're looking to save some money while playing upcoming titles at 1080p with just about any single GPU within your budget..

From Toms Hardware: (On HT)

"As you probably already know, Hyper-Threading is Intel’s simultaneous multi-threading technology that presents each physical core as two logical cores to an operating system. Thus, when you open the Task Manager on a Hyper-Threading-enabled Nehalem-based CPU, you see eight threads. This doesn’t mean you suddenly have the equivalent of an eight-core processor. Instead, Intel duplicates certain resources in each physical core to make the technology available; it’s better to think of Hyper-Threading as allowing the execution resources on a quad-core i7 to be better-utilized in threaded workloads."
