TSMC Shares More Details Regarding 16nm FinFET and 20nm Progress.

TSMC Has Tens of 20nm and 16nm FinFET Tape-Outs, Everything Goes on Schedule

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. revealed additional information regarding the progress of its 20nm planar and 16nm FinFET process technologies. The company appears to have tens of product tape-outs for both next-gen technologies and generally considers them as one node. The world’s largest contract maker of semiconductors expects no disruptions with either.

“We will begin volume production of 20nms in the first quarter 2014. That's 90 days from now. 16nm will follow 20nm in one year. We view both 20nm and 16nm as virtually one node,” said Morris Chang, chief executive officer and chairman of TSMC, during a conference call with financial analysts.

So, that means Maxwell might actually come out in Q1/Q2. Nice.

Probs Q2 due to time to market

I wouldn't count on it, they still have to get the good enough yields/leakage on large chips for Maxwell to work. I am thinking Q1/Q2 20nm product will mostly be small mobile SOCs, not large GPU chips.

The last 2 TSMC die shrinks (28nm/40nm) caused plenty of havoc with Nvidia chip designs: GTX 480/GF110(40nm) was leaky & runs super hot, power consumption through the roof. GK100(28nm) was outright abandoned because the yield and leakage was not good enough to make it work, Nvidia have to wait till September 2012 to ship GK110 as Tesla and Feburary 2013 to ship as Geforce Titan.

If Maxwell comes out in Q2 it will most likely be a medium sized chip like GK104 instead of a large chip like GK110.

So you say just buy a 780Ti or 290X hmm. I've read in many places since the past few days that the new Maxwell GPU's would come out in Q1 2014 (Feb-March) so I was thinking to use my iGPU just to hangout/wait, already have a lot of studying to do so no problem. But what you said makes sense and tells me that it can be delayed and the few months of wait could turn into a year which is not nice at all.
But isn't the time for a new gpu from nvidia feb-march? the titan came out 7/8 months ago didn't it?

They have a deal with Apple to have their processors (on 20nm) ready by Q1 2014 and their 16nm processors ready by 2015.
That's the main extra proof some analysts have that TSMC will deliver (at those dates).

Considering GPUs, it's likely to be after Apple, so optimistically, after around April, pessimistically, September or so but I suspect NVIDIA and AMD will not agree to play ball for so long.

Maybe when Nvidia gets their share of 20nm fabs, they will do a low or mid range card to work out the kinks before messing with a flagship.

Good news, 20nm can't come soon enough, especially for AMD. Who wants 95c GPU's seriously rolleyes.gif

So after they get Apple their chips I could see Nvidia dropping the new gpu's around May. Probably start with their mid range cards first to iron out the kinks before making a big die gpu. Sounds good and also 16nm is coming Q1 of 2015.

It's interesting that they already build their equipment for 16nm (FinFET) together with 20nm (non FinFET). It probably explains how they will manage to be ready so soon after 20nm.

NVIDIA has its 16nm design lined up, it's supposed to have stacked VRAM on the same die, for super VRAM<->GPU speed.
