Need input on GPU cooling and purchase... Please.

Hello OC!

Im looking to purchase a new GPU - I'm gaming on 1920/1080, single screen, but would like to spend a bit extra so i dont have to upgrade next year or so, but still keep the graphical fidelity. So, 290x and 780 are my top choices, and give the performance/price difference, im leaning towards 290x.

Cooling info: I'm running front and top fans blowing "cold/room temp" air in, and Liguid CPU cooler - H100 pushing air out back from the case through the heat sink. My GTX570 is reference, so it also pushes air out the back. This is working well, as hot air is mosty pushed out back, and cool air is dominant in the case. With my fan profiles, CPU idles at 28C, under max load stays below 45C; GPU is idling at 35C and under full load at 60C - I am very happy with this. So with all the reviews on 290x, the temps worry me, and here is my question: if i get reference cooled one, so it still pushes air out, and R290x running at 95C will probaly increase my case air temp and cause my cpu to run hotter. How much impact on my CPU temp would you estimate? OR if i wait for FAN cooled 290x they may run under 95C, which is what i want, but than will dissapate all the hot air in my case, and mess up my H100 air-out setup...

So any suggestions on whats the best option? 1. 290x reference and cooler case/cpu? or 2. 290x dbl/trip fan and hot case/cpu? or 3. Just get a reference 780 and cough up extra cash? or 4. Switch my fans in the case around? 5. wait for r9 290 and see if it runs as hot as the sun...

Sorry its a long post, and thanks for any advice!

Get a 290X and use it for now and then wait for aftermarket coolers. That's what I would do if I were to buy a 290X.

I would if there were any left. LOL. I will probably wait to see r9 290 details on the 31st.

Still I never owned a non reference cooled card. What's your experience with case temp increases from the aftermarket fan cooled gpu?

I could always turn my H100 around and pull cold air in from outside to cool the CPU.

Wow, didn't realize they were that popular it's all sold out on NewEgg. I always used Arctic Accelero coolers for air cooling as they seem to be pretty much the only ones left making aftermarket air cooling and got somewhere between 10-15C lower in temps than from a stock fan sitting at 27C idle, but with the crappy reference fan I'd be sitting at about 42-43C idle. When I put my GPU on water it's a whole lot more from 43C to 17C idle. My case temps were always better with an aftermarket cooler than without. All this also depends on the ambient temps and the time of the year. My case gets much hotter during the summer time as I always saw condensation in my reservoir.

Most people who go for air cooling usually get the Vapor X models if they can wait. Or you could be like me and be lazy and use the crappy reference cooler and then buy an aftermarket air cooler later on when you feel like it. I threw away my broken stock reference fan, it really is a piece of garbage. Haven't really been on an nVidia card since Geforce 2 Ti and have been following ATI ever since then, I've cut back on gaming a lot so no 280X/290X for me.

Non-reference 290X with proper cooling will be released in about 2 weeks... since 290Xs are all sold out everywhere now I'd just wait and get something like a Sapphire Vapor-X/Toxic 290X or MSI TwinFrozr/TriFrozr 290X. If you just have a good number of case fans and balance your intake and exhaust so your case has good airflow, everything will stay cool.

Really? Cool. That can make the thing more attractive to me because, as is, no f****** way!
But, from where did you got that claim? I heard Tom Logan, and he said ASUS R9 290X DCII will not be ready this year, as well as other vendors models...

That would be awesome, but I have a feeling that we won't see them for a while. I'm hoping that r9 290 comes out on par with 780 and tops at at least 10C less than X.

But either way I have to wait, since I have an amazon gift card and damn amazon has nothing listed for 290X yet... And I'm assuming they won't have any 290's anytime soon. I guess battlefield 4 will run at 10 FPS on my 570.
