Kinda new at folding

Thread Starter
I have been lurking around here for a few months and have been folding in that time. Now I recently got a new gpu to add to my rig( I know I haven't added it yet), and was wondering if there is any noticable diffrence if the card is running at x8 instead of x16 with regards to ppd. My setup is an fx-6300 with 12gb ram and 2 gpus a 7950 in my top slot gunning at x8 since my older 6750 is in the x16 below it. I can move the 6750 to the bottom most slot but it would be running at x4. Should I leave it be or move the other?

I did notice that imediately upon reboot that my ppd went from 7k to 11k with the 2 gpu clients and 4 cpu clients

If I read this correctly, you are using your 6750 in your x16 slot and the 7950 in the x8 slot is that correct? The info might be helpful in me optimizing your PPD, but most definitely something you should do is switch the 7950 up to Core 17 units vs. the Core 16 units it sounds like you are folding.

I don't think the x4 versus x16 is going to affect folding much.

With client-type = advanced that 7950 should be getting around 80k ppd on Core 17 work units, assuming you are running a recent AMD driver (I have 13.4).

My 6750 was only good for 4600 PPD running the 0x17 work units. You can mess around with older drivers and SDKs, but you would lose more points on the 7950 than you would gain on the 6750.

I hope that are using SMP folding with 4 cores and not 4 separate CPU single core clients, you will get more points running SMP.

Actually the 7950 is in the x16 and the 6750 is in the x8.

I've heard that the new 17 cores get better, but I am still on the 16's

When I set up the slots, I just added a cpu and changes the -1 to a 1 for cpu. Was this wrong? If so can someone tell me how to make it right? As I said I am kinda new to folding.

OK, what you should do is leave the setting of CPU at -1 as F@H will adjust it as it sees fit this way, and it is also folding in SMP rather than the way you were folding which is basically folding on many single core CPUs. All you need to do to fix that is edit one CPU folding slot and set it to -1, and delete the others (again, if I am understanding this correctly, this is what you want to do). To get Core 17s all you need to do is edit your GPU folding slot (probably wouldn't bother doing it with your 6750) and then add at the bottom client-type: beta/advanced, one or the other, not both.

First, I would change the cpu back to -1 unless that slows your gpu folding. If your gpus do fold slower then perhaps try 4 or 5 to leave free cores for the 2 gpus (since you have a 6 core).

As for the core17 WU's.
Check out this post/thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1367557/core-17-advanced-wu

Alternatively here is a screen shot from my setup:

No it won't. They pull from different wu pools. However for your purposes it doesn't matter. Either advanced or beta should pull core17 units. I have beta set because a couple of times the advanced flag pulled core15 units and ppd plummeted but the same probably happens to beta from time to time.

Good luck!
