Anyone grabbing a 290/x? - Page 2

Most of the reviews complain about the temp and noise of the 290X.
For Boinc, it seems like water cooling will be a necessity for the 290X reference cards.

MW don't run (App version needs CAL but GPU doesn't support it)

PrimeGrid don't run (App version needs CAL but GPU doesn't support it)But runing using app_info. Run a little slower than HD 7970

Poem and Einstein. working run a little slower than HD 7970

Collatz and DistRTgen. working run about 50% better than HD 7970

^ above From Nov 3...

It's odd, seeing how Milkyway is not an ideal project given lower double precision than Tahiti.

End result is that Tahiti is more powerful than Hawaii with double precision calculations. My 290X is 30% slower than a 7970 GHz.

This, combined with the immense heat and noise with the reference cooler (I'm sorta stuck with it, its in a Node 304, no room for enough radiator surface area to cool 400+ watts effectively), and I'm debating selling it. A 7970/R9 280X or a GTX 780 should do until 20nm GPUs arrive with a single 2560x1440 display I think.

If you are watercooling or have great aftermarket cooling and only play games, Hawaii is excellent.

POEM@Home is an oddball because of its CPU/RAM reliance, so I'm not too concerned about performance there (my 7750 with a Xeon E3 is 2/3rds as performing as the R9 290X and a 4770K). Einstein needs an app update, as I'm running on par with a 7950.

things seem to be working pretty well. running 3X WU's and getting AP's done in about 23 minutes is awesome
About 30 min per task on SETI

==================
SUMMARY
Collatz Conjecture - good
DistrRTgen - good
SETI@home - unimpressive, 7970 takes about 30 min so this is about 25% gain in speed (directly proportional to shader count)

Einstein@Home - bottlenecked unless there's been a change since Nov 3
POEM@HOME - bottlenecked unless there's been a change since Nov 3
MilkyWay@Home - bad
PrimeGrid - doesn't run ?
World Community Grid - unknown

Might wait the 7-9 months for 20nm at this point with non reference cards still nowhere to be found.
