Sell 7990 now - easier to do compared to later on - go get 2 r9 290x. If it doens't work out for his setup at 1440, r9 290x can be resold easily. The other way around though, you'll get less back trying to figure out the right setup.
While 2x 290x may or may not be a better setup (since we have to see what the card can achieve with aftermarket cooling), a 7970 + 7990 would be the best solution IMO. They will use the same amount of power, and have approximately the same amount of performance (maybe a little bit less) but the overall cost involved does not justify the performance when using a single 1440p monitor.
Say he gets what $400 for his used 7990 (considering powercolor ones go for $500 new and $580 for maltas on newegg)... and he has to spend $550x2 for r9 290x's.. that means he would have to spend $700 for the 290x's. Whereas he could get a new 7970/280x for possibly under $300.... that would equate to an extra $400 spent.
Plus he would have the advantage of tri-fire micro stutter reduction. And if he's air cooling he would have to wait for non-reference 290x cards to hit the market which could take a few months.Edited by Authie - 10/25/13 at 5:12am
