Dell XPS Problem

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I recently inherited this laptop from my friend. It is a Dell XPS 17 (l702X). He spilled water on the laptop and thought it was dead but i just dissassembled it and found water still under the keyboard and touch pad area and i dried it off and wiped it clean with alcohol. There seemed to have been damage to the connectors on the motherboard though, the connector that the power button ribbon cable. It is kind of a dumb design that this laptop does not just have a separate power button. The computer does not turn on when I insert the ribbon cable to the connector but when it turn the ribbon cable upside down, it sort of shorts the connection out and the laptop turns on. Anyway to fix this?

You can take that ribbon to any tech repair shop and they can get another made for you. They get one custom made technically, that's how I did it for the M17x I had. :3

I'm not quite sure if it is the cable that is the problem or the connector.

Can I find this ribbon on ebay? I looked at the model number or something on the cable, P-TWO AWM 20696 E221612-S but couldn't find the correct one. Not sure how many pins this ribbon cable has.

It's custom made for that laptop, so you'd probably have very limited success outside a tech shop. I couldn't find the resources needed to get another ribbon on my own... but it's a fairly painless process. Takes about a week's time. smile.gif

When you say tech shop, what kind of shop are you referring to? A computer repair shop?

Yeah unfortunately. They've got the connections (no pun intended) needed to get the job done.

Wouldn't the tech shop people need to know how to make ribbon cables since you said they are usually only made for the laptop?

I can't really tell how much pins the ribbon cable has, I think 12?
