So a bit of an update...

I have yet to get my MSI 280X...no one has stock of the bloody thing! The date when the supplier will have stock has been pushed back from the 4th of November to the 11th, then the 14th, and now the 18th. I am considering getting the ASUS but it is a whole R1000 (~100USD) more than the MSI. At least they have stock though! frown.gif

If I add another R500 or 50USD I can get myself a nice vanilla 290! So many choices frown.gif

Don't pay another $100 for the ASUS one over the MSI one, it is not worth it at all and it would be stupid to pay that much more for it. It's ridiculous that it costs so much more where you are, here it is about £20 price difference between them (MSI ~£240 and ASUS ~£260).

I am thinking that same thing - I have three options currently:

1 - wait it out and get the MSI for R4000
2 - get the ASUS for R1000 more
3 - get a reference R9 290 for R1500 more

The thing is we have no idea how long we will have to wait for the MSI card. The ASUS they have stock so they can have it here within a week. I am very keen on a Powercolor 290 but the reference cooler is very off-putting, and I do not think it will fit into my case ALTHOUGH the CM Scout measures between the PCI bracket to the front hard drive bays, and because I have a small motherboard the graphics card is actually in line with the bottom 5.25" drive bay - so I might just be in luck

the R9 290 is a beast. set the fan speed at 55 - 60% fan speed. clock it at 1 Ghz. 25% faster than R9 280X. if you can fit the card in your case then go for the R9 290 thumb.gif

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQhqOKKAq7o

check out the video at 0:19 - 0:27 for 55% fan speed. remember this is a open test bench.. in a closed case it will be lesser noise.

the noise has been exaggerated by many people. actual users of the card are able to easily use the card at 55% fan speed without being disturbed .

I'm very sensitive when it comes to sound tongue.gif but I think I'll hang on for the AIB boards to release. I've stemmed the little voice in my head going 'buy it now, buy it now, buy it now!' biggrin.gif

PS - the MSI 280X that I was wanting to get has anyways now been delayed to November 29th - then it still has to get to SA and get through customs...so I would have seen it only in the new year anyways!

R9 290/X AIB Cards

Just talked to AMD as well as three big AIB partners and AMD as well as one big AIB told me that we should expect to see custom R9 290 and 290X cards in etail the second week of December. FYI....
