Recommend me a good 1 or 2TB drive?

Hey guys,

When I first built my computer, I thought 1TB was an insane amount of space, and never thought that I would need more. Well now, almost 2 years later, my games are really starting to fill up my drive, so I'm looking to get another 1TB or replace my current one with a 2TB.

This is the drive I currently have:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185

Phenomenal drive, I wish Samsung still made them.

The reason why I'm debating over getting a 1 or 2TB is becasue I have never owned a computer with more than one mechanical hard drive, so I don't know how the noise, heat, or power draw will be. My Samsung isn't too noisy, but it's noticeable when it's crunching away. I'm sitting right next to my computer, so maybe the noise of one bigger drive is better than two smaller drives.

What is your opinion on this? And what drive would you 1 or 2TB drive would you reccommend? When I first built my computer that Samsung was the top contender, so what is currently one of the best on the market? I heard the Caviar Blacks are just as good with performance, have a 5 year warranty, but are noisier, so I'm not sure.

Appreciate any and all recommendations. Thanks!

I have a Western Digital Black 1tb. Its quite noisy compared to blues and greens but as you mentioned it has a better warranty. Its not overly loud though and i would recommend it as a quality drive.
What do you use this your PC for? i use a 1tb black for OS and game installs and a few WD greens for storage of movies etc

Blues are faster. Just sayin'. Don't worry about heat or power. As long as you aren't pushing your PSU to the limit and have not-awful airflow, they'll be fine.

this

Blues are better than blacks and are more reliable tbh

but then doesnt matter what you get for HDD one day its mechanical componenets will die

if you are going for storage grab a barracuda/ green

if you want performance blue/ black is the best

Looks like they don't make 2TB blues though frown.gif How noisy are the blues? And are the Blue faster because they use 1TB platters while the Black still hasn't been updated yet?

What about going for a Hybrid drive? I'd put all my mmo's/multiplayer games on that so it's a little bit faster than a regular hard drive, and I get a good amount of space.
Something like this?

Unfortunately that is true. However, a RAID 0 array solves that nicely. They can sustain I think 350MB/s all the way to the inner 2x500GB before slowing much at all. For games, you need sequential speeds, not random, outside of initial loading. If you're worried about them kicking the bucket, then run stress tests the moment you get them and back up everything important. That's a given for any storage drive though.

Regarding noise, I'm not sure how reliable of an opinion I have, as there are three 120mm fans, one ~50mm fan (for the northbridge heatsink, thanks ASRock!), and two 200mm fans running on full blast in my rig, but I can't hear it all. Others have reported them as fairly quiet though.

As for the bolded part, that could not be more correct. They're updating the line with 800GB platters soon, but right now all but the 3TB and 4TB drives use 500GB platters. In fact, WD Reds beat them in sequential speeds despite the lower rotation speed.

Hybrid drives only work if the OS is loaded onto it. Secondary game drives won't cache anything and you'll waste money on a worse performing HDD. Does your motherboard support Intel caching? If it does, then a cheap, reliable HDD and a small SSD (120GB is the best value) for caching can achieve the same effect and, don't quote me on this, doesn't require the OS on that drive.

So that's what that sound is! There's a random, almost whining noise that I can barely here over the fans. It's there, but it's imperceptible over loud noises like music and explosions.

I've been doing a bit of research. I was looking at the WD Blues over the Blacks (because the Blacks haven't been updated to 1TB platters so the Blues are faster for cheaper), but sadly they don't make a Blue over a TB. From what I can tell, Toshiba is hit or miss, and Seagate's quality has really plummeted in recent years (I bought a Seagate laptop drive that was initially fine, then died in 3 months. Replacement one I received died 3 weeks later).

I'm guessing any 2 drives would make more noise than 1, so is there a 2 or 3TB drive out there that is just as reliable as the Samsung, make about the same noise (hoping for less but that probably won't happen), but performs just as fast if not faster?
