My wife was using a WD My Book Studio drive, and one day it decided it wasn't going to show up. Going to disk utility on her Mac, the drive didn't show up at all, and the drive didn't sound like it was spinning up.

Upon opening up the drive, I found, to my horror, a Caviar Green drive, and already suspected the worst.

I threw it into a hard drive dock, and plugged it into my computer. The computer (W7) detected it immediately and identified it by the model number. It didn't show up in the drive list. Checking the partition utility in 7 yielded a drive that appeared to be unformatted.

Putting it back into the Mac yielded the same results. No First Aid options available.

I dug up a copy of DiskWarrior but DW 4.4 doesn't list the drive, although in Disk Utility the drive is identified and the capacity is listed as well.

I removed the jumper pin thinking that have something to do with it, but to no avail.

Am I missing something here? Usually when drives fail they give 0 capacity, or don't show up at all. Is there anything else I can do before I start exercising some percussive maintenance on this sorry excuse for a hard drive?
