So, no, I didn't illegally obtain this version of Windows, but I never bothered to investigate the issue further because it's never impacted anything that I'm aware of. I suppose I could call Microsucks and see if they can switch my license to this computer since I don't use the laptop but, again it hasn't impacted anything that is important to me and I'm lazy. lol
I am not at all familiar with linux OS's, which one would you recommend as a windows replacement? I'd be curios just to try one to see how it compares.
I guess I haven't completely ruled out the DVD drive itself. It seems to have, for a short period of time, failed to be recognized since I let my friend borrow it...maybe something got damaged. Of course that was only for a day or so and then it got recognized again. Unfortunately I don't have any great way of testing it atm since I don't have another computer to use it with or another drive to try.

If you used your license key on the laptop then the only way I'm aware of getting that key usable again is to delete the entire OS from the laptop it is on and then give MS a call and just tell them you had to reinstall. It worked every time for me whenever I had a new mobo or had to actually reinstall from a serious mess up I did to something. I could have sworn MSOffice wouldn't work without a valid windows install but I can't remember.

On the main point the way to test the DVD drive is probably something simple like having it write a full DVD of data on a disc and then having it checksum. Someone else in one of the hardware sections of this forum should know a surefire way though so ask around.

As for Linux...if you're unwilling to learn a new way of doing things (though these new ways could make your life much easier) then they may not be for you. As long as you don't go in expecting "free Windows" then I can recommend trying out Mint or one of the buntu variants (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu). The biggest problem besides some hardware issues is that most people aren't used to and actually reject the amount of freedom and control that Linux gives them. Some people just become overwhelmed with all the choice.
