Acer Aspire 3680-2682 CPU Upgrade?

Thread Starter
OK, This all started back in like 2007, I bought this Acer Aspire 3680-2682 in hopes that I could use it for light multitasking for school, the basic word docs, youtube videos etc. It turned out that a machine with 512mb RAM, Celeron M 440, and running Vista home basic couldn't even do that. angrysmiley.gif So, angry, I threw it into my closet, forgot about it, and bought a more powerful laptop. Flash forward to 2013, I rediscover this laptop and view it as a challange, I wan't to make this thing as badass as possible, So I install a 7200rpm HDD, 2gb of DDR2-667 RAM, redo the thermal paste on the mainboard and put a fresh copy of WinXP Profesional on it. Still not fast enough. I do some research online, to figure out that the CPU is mPGA, removable and upgradable. I do deeper research on http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/206137-upgraded-acer-3680-celeron-cpu-t5300.html And find that....

Awesome! Mine can be upgraded to a C2D! thumbsupsmiley.png
Now if only I knew which one I needed to get...

Ok sweet, I'm going to get the C2D T5300, but I need to make sure I have the 943GML Chipset, and update the BIOS to the latest version
.
.
Cool, I updated my BIOS to v1.3508, the newest version, so thats done, all I need to do is check the Chipset...

Cool! My sticker starts with MB.AZL06, so I have the 943GML Chipset, just what I needed! Now let me order the part on Ebay...

(Arrives)

Nice, no bent pins, wipe off old thermal paste, and good to go. biggrin.gif

(dissassembles laptop, cleans internals, installs C2D)

Now all I have to do is boot up...

BLACK SCREEN. sad-smiley-002.gif

What?!?! NOTHING? NOT EVEN THE BIOS? How could this happen? I checked everything! I had a supported model number, the right BIOS, and a compatible chipset! why didn't the upgrade work? Ok. This is where you guys come in, do you guys think the Proc. is faulty? Is there something I did wrong? Did I forget to check something? I literally have NO IDEA why this didn't work, I honestly spent 2 weeks researching this to make sure it would go off without a hitch, and then nothing. So if you guys could take like 5 minutes to skim the forum page and see if you can find any holes in my plan I would be very grateful. (P.S If you need more info, just ask, i'm pretty active on the forums)

Thanks,

the only thing I can think off Is the processor being dead. have you put the Celeron back in to check any faults
also did you but the laptop used or new.

check the bios for the motherboard details as the ram lid could have been replaced

Thanks for the responses guys!

@richie_2010, I bought the laptop at Best Buy in 2007, brand new. So I don't think the sticker would have been replaced, and i'm putting the Celeron back in today to check the bios to see if its the
right chipset, so I should get some solid knowledge of that soon.

@davcc22, I don't think it's a dead CPU, when I bought it on Ebay, it said it was tested good before it shipped.

@qwertymac93, How would I go about resetting the CMOS on a laptop, I know how to do it on a desktop, but for a laptop, do I just pull the CMOS battery out and put it back in?

Yeah, you just take both the main battery and the little cmos battery out and wait 30 seconds or so.

Thank you so much for the advice quertymac93! Yeah, I had to go to a soccer game, so before I left, I unplugged the CMOS battery and took out the main battery, and when I came back home, I plugged both of them back in, booted it up and it installed my processor with no issues! Thank you! cheers.gif
