Games freeze but can still hear sound.

I'm sorry guys, new here. Not quite sure where to post. But I've asked many people about my problem and they seem to have no idea what is going on with my computer.

I'll be playing Counter Strike GO and my game will stutter for about 5 seconds everyone 15-30 minutes but I can still hear people talk, their sentences don't get interrupted but my gameplay does. I'll rubber band back to the spot I started stuttering at, as you can imagine this gets me killed in CS and other games a lot and causes unnecessary deaths and losses. I had my friend build my computer for me, I'm not too computer savy in the hardware section of things.. But I can tell you what's inside my computer and the specs.

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 8.00 GB
Graphics Card: ASUS Radeon 7870 Series
Motherboard: ASRock z77 extreme 4

Please if I posted in the incorrect forum tell me and I'll post this elsewhere, thank you very much for your time.

Edit: Forgot to say it's not just my games that freeze up. I have 2 monitors and I usually have a stream open on my 2nd monitor and it'll freeze as well. Thanks everyone

You could try to re-install the drivers upto the latest 13.11 and then test your games. You'd need to do a clean install in it, uninstall the drivers from control panel, restart to safe mode and use a utility called DriverSweeper to remove any remnants of old install. Then boot to windows to install a fresh see if that helps

The thing is though, I just got my computer back from my friend because it acted up before. The graphics card was the problem, he did an RMA and got a new one. I got the computer back about a month and a half ago and made sure the drivers were up to date when I got my computer back. I was thinking it was more of a hardware issue, but then again I'm not expert. I won't lose any programs or anything when doing what you suggested, right? I just uninstall the drivers and then reinstall in safe mode?

nope. All your data would be safe. And you don't have to install drivers in safe mode, its the utility that you need to run in safe mode.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - but I did what you said and I still get the problems. They don't seem to be as bad though. Instead of both of my screens locking up, it's only my main screen and the streams i'll have open will continue to work. When I play CS:GO though, I noticed the "choke" will spike up to anywhere from 60-80 when I freeze up, then after a few seconds go back down to 0.

have you tried reinstalling the game?
could be that crashing and giving you issues instead of your drivers.
is your GPU overclocked at all?
