Help with Mint

Thread Starter
Hey guys, ill try to keep this one short. Im having trouble installing Mint on my computer at home. I created a partition about 9 GBs, then downloaded and tried to install via windows, which worked initially. The problems arose when i booted into the OS. I can tool around on the home screen, but when i click any of the applications, like update manager, the system hangs indefinitely. I would really like to get an easy graphical version of linux installed alongside windows.

Can't you boot from the live, install on your new partition and install GRUB on the MBR?

Never use a WUBI install ( or whatever Mint wants to name their version ). I will always remain persistent on this. There is simply too many bugs and other issues related to installing Linux inside Windows in such a way. I've never seen a single install last long enough to be usable at any level of productivity, or even just for messing about.

Uninstall it and reinstall it the proper way, by burning the ISO onto a CD/DVD/USB and booting from it that way.

What are your purposes for installing it. Not saying you shouldn't but maybe a virtual machine may be the best option at the moment? Then you can run inside of windows, still have direct access to both at the same time.

If not comfortable with installing it directly a vm may be the best idea to begin with. Install 2 linux distros to a single vm so you can get a feel for setting up dual boot without risking your windows install. Try this.

Yep, I second Shrak & Tadaen - VMs are great, WUBI is definitely not. In fact, I think WUBI has been dropped from the latest Ubuntu?

Anyway, booting the live DVD and installing into the partition you created is the way I'd go (and have done myself on my main rig). Don't mess around with Windows installers, more trouble than their worth
