[DSOGaming] pCARS developer: Mantle will offer 70-80% of next-gen console performance (regarding draw calls) - Page 9

The interconnection between CPU and GPU on an APU appears to be PCIe from an operating system and driver perspective, but the link actually has much higher bandwidth. The beauty of abstraction at work.

From what I know about graphics programming, you guys have all sorts of methods to get around the draw call throughput limitations. But would these methods be necessary if the limitation didn't exist at all (or was significantly alleviated)?

I think it's related to the PCI-E bus, ironically, it's an extremely slow bus compared to VRAM<->GPU intercommunication so they try to use it as little as possible, it explains why the trend has been for many years now to offload as much as possible on the VRAM before even beginning rendering, it seems like the GPU makers love it, and I suspect systems with unified VRAM/RAM and fast intercommunication between memory and CPU/GPU like PS4's general idea will benefit us all, if they don't create monopolies.

We have precisely zero data right now on Mantle one way or another.

There is a difference between speculation and educated guessing.

Based off what we know, his theory isn't too far off, if off at all.

I predict Mantle will be the BSOD driver of the decade. The driver team at AMD has not impressed me over the years and this is huge. It will take forever to polish to an acceptable level. Just my 2 cents.

PS: I wish they deliver something great. I just skeptical since we are putting the words Driver, AMD and revolution in the same phrase.

Drivers are much better nowadays especially if you are running one card. Most problems originate from crossfire and using beta drivers which aren't guaranteed to work perfectly.

The Mantle driver is supposed to be "thin" i.e. there is none or little abstraction between programmer and hardware and it is less complicated versus a full directx or opengl driver. This means less bugs and easier to optimize.

Looks like mantle is more about making "work" easier for developers more than anything else. Better performance is sort of a side benefit.

Both companies have their share in that category. However both have been well on their game recently. The access level is hardware, if there are BSODs it'll more likely be because of the game programmer.

If you open up GPU-Z with an A10-5800k or 6800k it's bus interface is listed as N/A.

If G-Sync opens up I don't expect it to be done by NVIDIA (or AMD) but tv makers to see response and make their own standard so that any projection device in the world can use it.

That'll be something I'll look forward to. PS4 plus that would be nice.
