I just got this brandnew and it says 128bit.........*** is that??
I got a lousy 76fps on the tool, compared to my 1650pro with only 4 pipes has 180fps.

I thought this is a kicka$$ card!
Can I do anything to get the 256bit back ?
Flash it to a 9800XT perhaps?
It has samsung 413 rams
Thanks

Some 9800PROs were indeed 128bit (usually Sapphire had them). I remember there being a whole issue about it because vendors did not clearly labeled the different cards, so one would end up getting the cheaper 9800PRO and latter find out that it's only 128bit (it was a bit more powerful than a 9600XT). ATI latter started to clearly label the different cards to avoid problems (I even think some vendors got sued). I think you ended up with the 128bit version and I'm afraid there is nothing you can do about it (except get rid of the card).

Its going back, what a joke.
I am really not happy with ati right now, the heatsink doesnt even make contact with the crappy drr ram.
Why not say its a 9800se or non pro.
It obviously isnt a 9800pro, its like buying a 5.0 mustang that has a 6cylinder in it.

I have the 1650pro back in.
I figured the 8 pipe 9800 would rock this 4 pipe 1650, no?
I thought it would be a r360 since its got a 2006 bios..........?
I think these pipes are wack and the 256 bit, uggghhhh.
I give up

Oh and the clocks, 324 and 229?
My 9600se could go 420 easily on the core, the 9800pro I seen sparkly mist at 400, thats garbage man.

It was really sneaky on Sapphire's part (the vendor that had these parts). Both cards are PROs since everything else is the same (same clock and RAM speeds).

#10 ·
It's junk, ATI made it not sapphire.
It's got crappy ddr1 ram.
The clock is 324 not 380 and the ram is 229, not 340 or anywhere close.
Its a 9800se and not even that cause 9800se has ddr2@ 680

Its a huge difference from 128 to 256 bit.
You expect 256 bit when you purchase a 9800pro 256mb.
Sorry to vent on your site, I just am really not happy with ebay ati and the computer in general, but I need my games.
I just hope I get refunded, especially since the ad for this card states 256bit, twice, I should have a case.

The SE is different from the 128bit PRO. I'm very sure that it was Sapphire that came up with it.

How can you be mad at ATI because someone on eBay didn't properly label the card they're selling?

There are 9800 Pros with 128bit or 256bit, 128mb or 256mb, if the seller is honest they'll tell you exactly what your paying for. They're supposed to have DDR1 memory, and the heatsink isn't supposed to touch the memory because its a smaller heatsink and the memory doesn't need the cooling.

They're the best AGP cards in that range and of their time, though an X1600 Pro is a bit faster.

You can't compare pipelines because the cards are on 2 totaly different architectures.

Just joined this forum seeking advice on 2 cards -- an ATI 9800 Pro (128MB) and ATI 9550 (256MB) <-- these are real ATI brand cards.

Now the 9550/256MB only has 4 pipes, but it can handle the textures in F.E.A.R., at the expense of crawling in shadowed scenes. The 9800/128MB has 8 pipes, can't handle the max textures, yet doesn't crawl as bad.

I'm using the ATI Tray Tools app to test OC'ing the card, and since this card is passively cooled (read no fan), I'm only slightly OC'ing it. So far I went from 250 to 297 Core/200 to 207 Mem (rock stable). In F.E.A.R., the performance is still dismal in some places with medium settings and shadows enabled -- 8fps in one scene.

Would it be better to try to milk more performance out of the 9550/256MB due to it's larger memory, or just put back in the 9800/128MB card due to having more speed and pipes and try to OC the mess out of it, instead?

Any helpful advice welcome!

Well the 9800pro 128bit sux.

Also the guy with fear, I play everyday and I had a sapphire 9600se, it acually did pretty good for what it was.

And as I posted before the screenprint of the acual ad, it says 256bit.
I got hosed Tommy, I got hosed...........

Installed a P4 3.2Ghz Northwood (cool as a cucumber -- 87F with an lapped Alpha HSF and 80mm Vantec fan) and got the 9550/256MB along with other parts and case for Christmas. Thought more texture memory would help in F.E.A.R., but alas, it can run the high-end textures @ <35fps on motion scenes.

Put the 9800/128MB card back in moments ago.

This is indeed a 256bit card, and defaults to 378Mhz Core/338Mhz Memory. The difference is night and day (all default speeds):

How do I activate the benchmarks?
Is it in 0.26 tool?

Real video card? My 9600XT ran CSS at 1280x1024 med/low just fine.. This was also on a Sempron 2800+ with 512mb of RAM.. Ran FEAR at 800x600 low/med fine as well. The 9800 isnt anything impressive, neither is the X1650, but its not like it horrible and will play games slowly, just cant turn up the settings as much as a higher end card.

In the 1.2.6.964 version - Overclocking Settings>Bench!

Nice tool to also automatically OC (by 1Mhz) either the GPU or Mem and then scan it for artifacts -- in real-time. Then bench each 1Mhz setting (nice not to have to adjust one level, exit and test in another app, wash, rinse and repeat). It's not like the other benchies, but it's spoton for it's sole purpose - tweaking ATI settings.

A 9800 Pro is faster then a 9600XT, though the 128mb can limit what texture quality you run, the performance is a good bit faster.

For all the people saying "forget about your 9800" lets try and remember not everyone has the graphics budget for higher end cards, also how do you expect him to get an X1800 for his AGP board?

Don't be mad at ATI just because you made a stupid purchase.
