ATI 9800PRO 256MB 128bit?? - Page 2

I think I got ripped too...why is my 9500Pro 128-bit? I thought they were just 9700 Pros with lower clocks???

Yeah, that is sneaky...just to lower production costs. That's terrible...

Its a huge difference from 128 to 256 bit.
You expect 256 bit when you purchase a 9800pro 256mb.
Sorry to vent on your site, I just am really not happy with ebay ati and the computer in general, but I need my games.
I just hope I get refunded, especially since the ad for this card states 256bit, twice, I should have a case.

The SE is different from the 128bit PRO. I'm very sure that it was Sapphire that came up with it.

How can you be mad at ATI because someone on eBay didn't properly label the card they're selling?

There are 9800 Pros with 128bit or 256bit, 128mb or 256mb, if the seller is honest they'll tell you exactly what your paying for. They're supposed to have DDR1 memory, and the heatsink isn't supposed to touch the memory because its a smaller heatsink and the memory doesn't need the cooling.

They're the best AGP cards in that range and of their time, though an X1600 Pro is a bit faster.

You can't compare pipelines because the cards are on 2 totaly different architectures.

Just joined this forum seeking advice on 2 cards -- an ATI 9800 Pro (128MB) and ATI 9550 (256MB) <-- these are real ATI brand cards.

Now the 9550/256MB only has 4 pipes, but it can handle the textures in F.E.A.R., at the expense of crawling in shadowed scenes. The 9800/128MB has 8 pipes, can't handle the max textures, yet doesn't crawl as bad.

I'm using the ATI Tray Tools app to test OC'ing the card, and since this card is passively cooled (read no fan), I'm only slightly OC'ing it. So far I went from 250 to 297 Core/200 to 207 Mem (rock stable). In F.E.A.R., the performance is still dismal in some places with medium settings and shadows enabled -- 8fps in one scene.

Would it be better to try to milk more performance out of the 9550/256MB due to it's larger memory, or just put back in the 9800/128MB card due to having more speed and pipes and try to OC the mess out of it, instead?

Any helpful advice welcome!

To all the problems your having, just buy a real video card like a 1800 or something, because dat 9800 is junk and all your games will run in slow motion,,,

Installed a P4 3.2Ghz Northwood (cool as a cucumber -- 87F with an lapped Alpha HSF and 80mm Vantec fan) and got the 9550/256MB along with other parts and case for Christmas. Thought more texture memory would help in F.E.A.R., but alas, it can run the high-end textures @ <35fps on motion scenes.

Put the 9800/128MB card back in moments ago.

This is indeed a 256bit card, and defaults to 378Mhz Core/338Mhz Memory. The difference is night and day (all default speeds):
