In the end though I just went with debian for it. Much easier to manage (for me at least).
I find vanilla FreeBSD much easier to manage than Debian. I cant comment about FreeNAS though

Well I mean I have CLI access I'm just not familiar with the FreeBSD command line so I don't really know how to navigate it yet. That's something I plan on learning much more about over the coming months.
