Installation guide/tips of REV.2 Icy Vision on R9 290X

Thread Starter
I have tested REV.2 Icy vision can fit to R9 290X and two end users in Hong Kong report to me that the full load temperature has dropped to 65-66C,and the fan noise about 25% of stock cooler.
But some end users also ask me some of questions about the installation of rev.2 icy on 290X, so after I made the Chinese Installation guide in HKEPC forum, I also translate that installation guide to English and post in here, because I have also received some PM question about rev.2 icy and R9 290X in this morning.
Front of the card:

1.Detach those screws by small size cross head screw driver, there are two screws on the PCI slot plate too.

2.After detached the stock cooler, keep the original screw and thermal pad.

3.At the upper left side of the card, you will see 3pcs of VRM chip, after my test, I suggest to use one VRM heatsink B and VRM heatsink D in the below link for these VRM module.
(reference: http://www.gelidsolutions.com/clients/gelid/userfiles/In_A3_4870_r9(2).pdf)
In the picture, because two legs are not in the same level, so you can use the extra double side thermal sticker in the packaging and fold it, until two legs of VRM D are at same level.

4.Below is my suggestion of ramsink and vrm heatsink arrangement, before you stick ramsink on the ramchip, I suggest you clean the ram chip by eraser, because remaining oil from original thermal pad trap in between of groove of the ram chip, according to my experience, alcohol cannot clean the oil completely.

5.Please notice that the ram chip below the GPU will be covered by the ICY mounting plate, You can found a half height ramsink in the VRM heatsink bag.
The ramsink was designed for NV card(NV GPU is about 1.xmm higher than AMD GPU), so you can use sand paper to grind the fins of the small ramsink by 1.5mm to avoid the conflict between the ramsink and mounting plate.
If you don’t have sand paper, then you can move the ramsink downward and keep some clearance between the ramsink and mounting plate.

6.Please use the stand-off C for 290X card and please make sure the countersunk screw is installed in the correct side(with countersunk cut) of the mounting plate, this no.1 FAQ in my tech support mail box. Please read the installation instruction and check the picture in below carefully.

7.Use nut F to fasten rev.2 Icy cooler from the back of the card and plug the 4pin connector to the 4pin socket of the card. ICY fan didn’t have PWM function; it will run at 2000RPM constant speed only. If you want to adjust the fan speed, you can use the fan extension cable in the package to connect the fan to fan speed controller /motherboard 3pin/4 pin molex from PSU.

Final temperature from one of HK End user
Idle 35-41C

Max temp in 3DMark11 66C
Thank for reading, I hope this instruction may help you.

This is awesome dude. I'm sure a lot of peeps would appreciate this.

meh... its nice but defeats the purpose of buying the card to hack to death in order to get cooler temps.
Good mod, but ugly one.

how many slots does the Icy vision take? I'd like to install 2 onto 290X Crossfire in a Rampage IV Formula board

Stock cooler is 2 slot design, and Icy vision is 3 slot design.

Will this work in crossfire?

My motherboard has the PCie slots spaced like that, and I was wondering if I could fit two cards, both equipped with this cooler in there.
yep, but 2 cards only, no soundcard etc smile.gif

Can this icy cooler fit onto 280x sapphire card?

REV.2 Icy vision can't fit R280X, because the height position of R280X GPU is lower than the metal protective frame.
That why I also design another cooler caller ICY Vision-A for HD7950/7970 and R280X

ICY Vision-A

If someone lapps (with sandpaper) the Icy vision-a until the diamond-shaped cone dissappears, and the surface becomes flat like in the original icy vision rev. 2, will the cooler be able to fit the 290x ?
