IMO the 290x's is an abomination at 95C for overclockers. I said earlier that this GPU would compete with the 780, but people thought i was crazy. My 770 does 1424Mhz on air, and still does not get up to 95c even in SLI mode. OC headroom makes a huge difference, and this GPU does not seem to have it on air.
To get the 290x to beat a 780 both OC, you will need a water block on that 290x which equals extra 100$. The 290x is a great AMD GPU, but that 95c is a shame. I hope the non ref coolers make a difference in temps, so that this GPU can be worth it in a way. If else, i smell another price Cut from AMD.
So much wrong with this post, so much wrong......
Can people stop spouting off about the temps? Seriously, does no one on this forum understand what TDP is?! Thermal Design Power!!!
A card with a TDP of 300W that runs its core at 50c, versus a card with a 300W TDP, but has a larger GPU and runs at 95c is still a 300W TDP card! A ton of feathers weighs as much as a ton of rocks! 300W of energy is 300W of energy, not matter how it is expelled/generated!
Christ, get off it already!
Secondly; The custom cards are going to start being sold in November by the AIB. Just like with every launch we will see non-reference design at reference pricing, and higher end non-reference design at slightly higher pricing.
As to your water block comment......
For about, maybe less, than the cost of a reference 780, you can buy a 290X and water block it. Your 770 won't touch that EVER, even at 2Ghz!
