Homelab / VMware and AMD FX-6300

Thread Starter
Hey All,

Getting a vmware box up at home for general foolin'.

Currently, running an AMD FX6300 6-core CPU (from retired rig) with 4GB of memory. For basic home stuff, fileserver/plexbox and DHCP/DNS/AD administration.

My concern is that the FX6300 won't be able to perform with 2 VMs (additional mem modules on the way)

I have a 2012 PDC up and its performing a prettyn sluggishly... Nothing else is running on that particular VM at the moment.

Will check back near lunch time; thanks all! thumb.gif

What hypervisor are you running, ESXi or similar?

Video is usually pretty sluggish until you install VMware Tools.
Also if you are using a mechanical drive between a lot of VM you'll certainly notice some latent behavior.

The host is ESXi and the tools have been installed inside inside the guest OS

Hm, do you get any sort of CPU utilization spikes or similar?
Do you have full gigabit links between your vSphere client and the server? Do you get the same behavior when using RDP into the guest OS?

I have a pretty low end Celeron in my ESXi box but haven't had any notably laggy experiences running a few VMs (Win2k12R2 DC, CentOS Proxy, Cisco WCS, Cisco vWLC, Cisco Callmanager).. The 6300 should be a lot beefier..

Edit: Also, 4 GB is a bit RAM strapped, I would verify that the hosts don't have to do excessive swapping to disk which would disastrously affect performance, but you've probably already thought of that.

Bumped ESXi to 5.1 and scrounged up another gig of memory, should be able to finally mess with this again tonight! smile.gif

That CPU should be more than adequate for your needs....RAM is what you want. Load the board's maximum amount of memory if you can.

Also WD VelociRaptors are good for running multiple VMs, if not an SSD.

Older, smaller WD VRs can also be had for cheap on our favorite auction site. A few of them striped can do wonders and the cost per GB would be low.
