[Motorola] Motorola's staking a claim on the Phonebloks idea.

Over the last six months, our MAKEwithMOTO team took Sticky, a truck wrapped entirely in velcro and filled with rooted, hackable Motorola smartphones and high-end 3D printing equipment, across the country for a series of make-a-thons. On that trip we saw the first signs of a new, open hardware ecosystem made possible by advances in additive manufacturing and access to the powerful computational capabilities of modern smartphones. These included new devices and applications that we could never have imagined from inside our own labs. Open fuels innovation. See some examples here, here, and here.

After the trip, we asked ourselves, how do we bring the benefits of an open hardware ecosystem to 6 billion people?

Meet Ara.

Phonebloks, in its original idea, was impossible. The only possible way it could've worked was if each component was given a designated socket. Which is what Motorola's doing.

The idea is brilliant but I don't like the look of the phone, and what is keeping the components locked in place? Hopefully it won't cost too much

Sweet. Im very glad that a bigger company is taking the idea and throwing some money into R&D. Hopefully something comes to market.

Even with this design there'll no doubt be tons of problems. One of the biggest I can think of is data transfer. Without soldered connections, performance is going to take a huge hit.

I don't really like the spaces between components on the back. Otherwise, Motorola is doing a great job so far.
Please don't tell me that they are gonna patent it.

Also i think it would be better if they add a back cover not only would it improve the aesthetics and further secure the parts it will also make it cleaner as you wont have to worry as much about muck getting in between all the parts.

It's a fantastic idea with a ton of possibilities. One of the phones looks like it has a smaller extra screen, perhaps instead of traditional on screen buttons? It'll be interesting what sort of platform there are, and if they design specific blocks for specific "bases" to avoid blank spots and the like. Could be VERY cool.
