Need new headphones/headset

Thread Starter
Hello all, this is my first post/thread here.
My old headset broke few days ago and currently only duct tape is holding it together, so I need new one.
I really need stereo headset with mic, but I'll also consider getting "better" stereo headphones with custom mod mic. (http://imgur.com/gallery/bKU4H/) .
I have Asus Xonar DX sound card (so no headphones amp), and i also don't plan to get any external amp (maybe I get Xonar Essence STX if I find one 2nd hand cheaply). Also I have Logitech G51 5.1 surround setup which I now use rarely because of small baby in the house. So I use headphones 95% of time.
My usage is 40% gaming,40% multimedia, 10% music, 10% Skype/Team Speak. My budget is around 150 EUR, but also prices in my country can be up to 40% higher then usual.
I checked some "gamer" headsets and I don't like any of those too much (except maybe Asus Orion headset - regular version with 3.5mm connectors - for around 85 EUR here). Also I checked some "audiophiles" headphones like BeyerDynamic DT 770 PRO 80 ohms (not sure if available here) and Audio-Technica ATH-A700X (around 220 EUR here!!!) but I'm not sure if Xonar DX is "good" enough for those.
Also my main concerns beside audio quality are comfort and durability and reliability.
What are Your suggestions? Thank You in advance.

DT770 Thomann.de
And yes, AD700X prices are silly in Europe.

You could also look at Superlux headphones if you want to be a cheapskate: HD330+velours etc.

DT770 80 ohms from Thomann.de are around 250 EUR after shipping and tax so its way too much. I can probably get DT770 32 or 250 Ohms for around 170 EUR but I'm not sure if they would sound good on my Xonar DX.
I know about Superlux HD330+velour pad combo but I'm new to audio scene and don't have enough experience to really make choice like this. Sure price is great but HD330's are 150 ohms so I think my Xonar DX would have hard time driving them and I know they are great in stereo mod but what happens when I use virtual surround from Xonar DX for gaming? Other big concern is how comfy are they after prolonged use?

I wouldn´t suggest 32 ohm DT 770s I heard that they are not as good as the 80 / 250 ohm version.

The 250 ohm version is very good and I think the xonar DX is able to drive the dt770. I dont have the experience because I have the essence ST but I have seen sometimes people with this combination and it cant be too bad.
As long its not onboard sound tongue.gif
The dt770 is still comfy after 1 year + and the HD330 is comfy aswell but not as much as the dt770 (without the pad mod)

The Superlux HD330 is great but the resolution is weaker, the bass is stronger and overall a bit dull. Gets better with some modding. Its still better than every gaming headset and most headphones up to 100 dollar.

Its a shame that Audio Technica's are so expensive in Europe, I was unaware of that until now.

You might check in to some of the entry level Sennheisers like the HD555s, or a lower level Beyerdynamic like the DT440s. My old roommate had DT440s that he loved, used them until replacing them with DT880s. Zalman clip-on mics work incredibly well for their price, in my experience, so if any of these lower end models are reasonably priced in your country I would have to recommend one of those with a clip on mic of some variety.

DT440's are 130 EUR here so not really much cheaper then dt770 250 Ohms (170 EUR).
I'll try to find info if is possible to get DT770 80 Ohms here - one place has them listed but no price and wait time is 2-3 weeks.
Also I'll check for any cheap 2nd hand Xonar STX's so I can get DT770 250 Ohms version.

I recommend DT990 Pro 250ohm over the DT770 Pro 250ohm.

What about the AKG Q701s?
Thread Starter
DT990 are around 300 EUR here so way out of budget for me.

AKG Q701s are not available here, and they look to me a bit too "sensitive", as I have little kid running around the house. biggrin.gif

EDIT: I just found AKG Q701s they are around 300 EUR here... mad.gif

Wow quite pricey there. US has them for just over 200 USD. Let me know what else you decide because I'm also looking for a headphone in a similar price range!
