Upgrade help please

So I love my i7 950. It's always been good to me.

I just got a second 7970. The CPU can handle it well, no problem in most games with good scaling and high multi GPU usage. However in Battlefield 3 and 4, my main games at the moment, GPU usage is just not impressive, the graphs are all over the place and I never seem to get higher than ~70% usage! resulting in a lot of fps dips below 60.

Leaning from many posts about the same issue in BF3, I've concluded its a CPU bottleneck. I would like to upgrade. My budget allows for either a 4770k or 4820k (both have bundle deals at micro center)

What do you guys think? Thanks.

If you want the most out of your GPUs, and will be doing Tri-Monitor or more, then I'd go with the 4820k, for the X79 Chipset. It gets you full PCI-E Lanes for both 7970s which helps quite a bit on tri+ monitors from what I've seen (I used to run a 2700k and have now switched to a 3820k). Also, I believe the PCIE 3.0 did have reasonable gains at the 5760x1080 res. I can't remember where, but I did find a site that had a ton of games done in 3x1080p and showed an increase.

Now... If you're not going to be doing anything else aside from gaming, and only on a single, or even a pair of 1920x1080 monitors, then I'd go for the 4770k, as it'll be cheaper due to the mobo / RAM costs.

Just note that the 2011 socket is very likely at the end of it's lifetime now... Where as the 1150 just came out, so there is likely one upgrade "tier" left in it..... Though if you've still got your first gen i7, I don't think it's a very large deal for you.

TL;DR - 4820k if you're going tri+ monitor for gaming; else get a 4770k.
