X1600PRO VS/OR Geforce/ATI Cards

Thread Starter
Hey,

I am currently buying a new system which contains the following specs:

Intel Pentium D Dual Core 2.8Ghz 2mb Cache or Pentium D Dual Core 3.0Ghz 4mb Cache

1gb DDR2 RAM

A PIC-e motherboard that can take all of my gear (lost the name )

Windows XP Profession 32-bit (I already own this... but is 64-bit worth looking at or not?? I hear it's crap and unstable, haha)

and a graphics card....

The one problem I am having currently is deciding on which graphics card to get. I can get a X1600PRO with the following specs for $134 AUD:

X1600Pro

157 Mio (Transistor Count)
256 or 512 MB (Gonna try and score 512... but might have to get 256) (Onboard Memory)
500 (Core Frequency)
800 (Memory Frequency)
12 (Shader Processor Units)
128 (Memory Bus Unit)
DDR2 (Memory Type)
2x400MHz (RAMDAC)

DX9.0 SM3
Hyper Z HD

But there is also a GeForce 6600 for $135 AUD?? I am currently using a GeForce 6200 (AGP) which does what I need it to for now but I am one of those guys who has to beat my dad/bro My bro is getting all of the specs I have said except he is getting the Pentium D 2.8Ghz model... I might beat him there by getting the 3.0Ghz model But I know he is getting a Radeon 9550 (256mb) which is exactly half of everything I have mentioned for the X1600PRO. Will I be dissapointed with 3DMark06 results with those specs or not?? I am not going to spend over $150 AUD on a graphics card (and NewEgg doesn't ship to AUS ) so which card should I be better off getting?? I am an nVIDIA fan but since I use to have the Radeon 9550 which did alot better in my computer I have right now (512mb DDR Ram, AMD Athlon XP 2600+, Windows XP Professional 32-bit, GeForce 6200) am I sorta confused... because people are still saying ATI are releasing models of their cards that are comparable to old nVIDIA style chips...

Well let me know what you think I should get. I have also heard the old X800 is better than the x1600PRO?? I don't think that though because I can run my GeForce 6200 (256mb) on the highest range of the GeForce FX Demos

Any help is appreciated but if you can name a card that is under $150 AUD and is a pretty good card (can score moderately well in any applications... mainly 3DMark06 ) I will be much appreciative!!

Cheers,

x1600's are alright, but you can get 7600GT's for cheaper and they preform better.

Or get a x1950 Pro

Yeah... I've noticed but I can't seem to find a cheap enough place for my price range. If somebody can tell me a cheap place where I can get good quality graphics cards that SHIP to AUS or are in AUS then thanks!! Also, eBAY for once doesn't seem to help me out on cheap graphics cards... haha, it's finally let me down

The x1600pro is a lot better than a 6600 or 9550. Probably the best you are going to be able to find within your price range in Australia. Shipping from most places would probably kill you even if you manage to find a good deal.

Haha, I reckon. And yes, I know it's alot better than a 9550 Thats so I can piss off my dad and bro, haha. I can be a little dick sometimes Anyway thanks, anymore suggestions?? Or is there anything for sale that you know of that might interest me?? Preferablly something on the cheaper side but still in the mid-high range... haha, but it has to be PCI-e! Thanks! Or is anyone able to sell me their graphics card that is PCI-e and is still a worthy card? Something in the GeForce 7 series (GeForce 7600GS upwards) or ATI Radeon X series (anything decent upwards) would be very nice.

Also, what do you think the X1600PRO can compare to in nVIDIA's range/series/model? I'm just interested to see how ATI and nVIDIA are going in competition and to see whats the better deal nVIDIA is winning though by a long shot now... it was winning with 7 series and now with the 8 series ATI has a bit to catch up on!

Cheers,

Can you give us some websites that ship to Au?

@ Du@lGeEk

eBAY my friend =P I can't find any place else... NewEGG HAS to learn to ship to other countires!!!

@ Akatsuki No Tobi

Hmmm... I was just looking at the 512mb model of the X1600PRO and the core is only 450Mhz and the memory is 400Mhz?!?! Thats just stupid! 'Cause the 256mb model is 500Mhz core and 800Mhz memory! Thats just weird....

@ Topic

Well I have decided to buy my new system in 2008 most likely. Mainly because by then I'm hoping GeForce 9 series will be released and then I can make a move on the 8 series =P Plus if I don't spend money upgrading now the technology then will be worth less and I can get a series ahead of what I want now (with DX10 and all now DX9 will fall through the floor).

Well thanks for all the help guys,

Hi all,

After a while I decided to get the rig I currently have listed for my user. The main parts are:

Intel Pentium 4 641 3.2Ghz (might overclock it to 4Ghz or higher someday =P)
Asus P5ND2 SLi Motherboard/Mobo
DDR2 2gb 667 (Dual Channel Kit, 2x 1gb) Kingston RAM
XFX nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT Extreme (520Mhz Core Clock, 1.5Ghz Memory Clock)
Windows XP Professional SP2
OMNI X51 Case (got all the cool lights, slide panels and fans =P)

I will post my 3DMark scores sometime next week... so yeah, it should be quite a good score hopefully =P The only reason it won't be is prob 'cause by my processor... But that can be easily fixed.

Cheers,

Hi all,

Ok... well while I was downloading and installing Counter Strike Source (CSS) through Steam I thought I'd run 3DMark. I got very good results even though I had my computer working. They are:

3DMark2001SE: 23,377
3DMark03: 17,850
3DMark05: 7,303 (I'm very questionable about that result?? I can run in it with full AA and and stuff and still get not go under 25fps??)
3DMark06: 4,294

As you can see I got pretty good results although 3DMark05 was a bit iffy? I ran it a few times as well and still got no higher? Oh well... well I tried out some games (such as Quake 4, FEAR, Need for Speed Most Wanted, etc.) and set everything to maximum (the highest AA, AF, HDR, etc. possible for the game) and had all my framerates extremely high. Like for FEAR I got 59 on average with everything maxed out! Woo! Haha.

Well my specifications are (just so you know):

Intel Pentium 4 641 3.2Ghz (might overclock it to 4Ghz or higher someday)
Asus P5ND2 SLi Motherboard/Mobo
DDR2 2gb 667 (Dual Channel Kit, 2x 1gb) Kingston RAM
XFX nVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT Extreme (520Mhz Core Clock, 1.5Ghz Memory Clock)
Windows XP Professional SP2
OMNI X51 Case (got all the cool lights, slide panels and 4 fans on the case alone)

Let me know if they're good results please.

Cheers,
Jacob
