A8 5600k stock cooler replacement

Hi guys

Stock fan and heatsink really struggled during the hot UK summer, so looking for a replacement. PC is mainly used as a htpc and very unlikely that it will ever be overclocked. Using a Fractal Core 3000 with 3 fractal fans 1 front, 1 top and 1 back connected to the Fractal fan controller.

Not looking to spend a great amount so would i be right in thinking that CM 212 evo would be adequate for my needs? Or is there something more suitable in roughly the same price range?

the evo is good but quite tall. what case do you have?

evo is 159mm , which is close but likely fine. There is a certain advantage of having the cooler fill that area of the case in that any air passing by goes through it.

There has been a bit too much hype about the evo, but all it really is, is a cheap 4 pipe 120m tower cooler with a decent (but also not excellent) fan that happens to come with decent paste. (which saves you 8 bucks unless you have good paste lying around)

There are a bunch of other tower coolers inthe same class that provide equivalent performance. It's all about the best deal.

The TY-140 series on the Thermalright coolers is top notch unlike the Cooler Master fans. Once you add in $10-15 for a decent fan the Thermalright offerings become top notch price/performance.

The True Spirit 120M from Thermalright is only 145mm tall. http://www.thermalright.com/html/products/cpu_cooler/true_spirit_120m.html?panel=1
Macho 120 is 150mm tall http://www.thermalright.com/html/products/cpu_cooler/macho120.html

Many people omit the fan swap from the heatsink cost. For example the Megahalems (and all non-"Basic" coolers) from Prolimatech come with no fans at all. Once you add in a fan or two you could get a more efficient cooler for the same cost.

The only exception to this is if you're going for color aesthetics, in which case Phanteks and Prolimatech Black/Blue/Red edition are your likely go to picks for coolers that have colors.

If you're limited to 160mm then you can go for a Phanteks (with shorter fans) or Noctua NH-D14... the heatsinks are only 160mm tall. The Phanteks PH-TC12DX is 157mm tall also but it's acoustic performance is not as stellar as the PH-TC14PE is (for its size it should compete with NH-U12S /NH-U12P and Macho120 .. or even Silverstone AR03).

Sorry for the late replies. On impulse i went for the EVO in the end, only because i managed to get a new un used one for £15. So if i decided to replace the stock fan or go push/pull total cost would be far off retail.

@AlphaC - I did seriously consider the true spirit but read somewhere that the fan has a slight rattle at lower speeds. I didnt come across the Macho when i was looking for a new cooler:sadsmiley , show that i didnt look properly.
