Worth it for Sound Card

Thread Starter
Since Ivy Bridge-E and X79 are limited to 40 PCI-e lanes, if I put 3 GPUs in x16, x16, x8, on a motherboard, I'm using all the lanes. Let me know if I'm wrong here, because I'm not used to multi-gpu, etc.

Now, I have a spare Soundblaster Zx from a rig I built a while back for a friend who didn't want the card. If I put the sound card in an x4 slot, using it a an x1 card am I jeopardizing or limiting the bandwidth of one of my graphics cards? I only ask because I don't want to sacrifice the potential of one of my gpus, but I'm not necessarily satisfied with my sound.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe tri-sli runs at x16x8x8, which means you'd be just fine.

From my understanding, on an X79 rig, you can run x16, x16, x8. Also, according to Asus's specs on my board (Rampage IV Gene: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/RAMPAGE_IV_GENE), it'll run x16, x16, x8. So, assuming that, will it limit my bandwidth to x16, x8, x8, and if so, will that really affect my performance and scaling? Running 770's, btw.

Your thinking is correct, just not complete.

There is no difference in terms of performance between 16x and 8x on the PCI-e slot. Several tests have shown this, as well. You could theoretically run at 4x 4x 4x and maybeeee you'll see a performance hit.

This is both in terms of real world and measurable performance.

The x1 slots run off the PCH, not the CPU, so adding a sound card to one of those slots will not impact the bandwidth for the GPUs at all.

Which board is it?

It's a Rampage IV Gene, so it's an x4 instead of an x1. Does the same principle still apply?

You can run it as x1. It's not like it needs the bandwidth of a x4 slot.

I'm aware of this. I'm saying that the slot is an x4. The question was whether the slot was controlled by the processor, or not.

-Corsair Obsidian 350D

-SeaSonci Platinum-1000

-Asus Rampage IV Gene

-Intel i7-4930K

-3x (modded) EVGA GTX 770 FTW

-Creative Sound Blaster Zx

Everything is watercooled, including the GPUs. Each one has a full-cover block, and was modded to fit in 1 slot (because why not?), and as far as I can tell I'm currently running them at x16, x16, x8. (Might be x16, x8, x8 anyway, splitting the PCIe 3.0 bandwidth, in which case this thread is pointless.) The question was whether or not the Sound Blaster will have a negative effect on the GPUs in terms of bandwidth or performance.
