1 step up from Radeon HD 7970

Thread Starter
What would be a step up from 7970 ?

I'm considering upgrading just for future proofing purposes, as I have a friend that wants 7950. Which I have now.

I figure going 7970 would be too close to my current results, especially if I overclock the card. Nvidia or AMD is fine.
I guess the benefit is the flexible overclock on AMD, so I guess which AMD GPU comes right after 7970 in performance?

I have been checking benchmarks and stuff is a bit misleading.

In benchmarks they were testing Nvidia GTX680 and it got beat by 7970, in some tests it didn't. So equivalents of step above 7970 or 680 would be perfect.

Thanks guys

R9 290 or 780.
R9 290 is probably your best bet, or perhaps the 780 as mentioned above but only when it comes down in price.

Lol, 7970 is still a good card, the next step up is an expensive step, like a 780 or 290x (maybe 290?).

Or, a second 7950 or pair of 7970s.

7970 is pretty beast of a card.
7950 @ 1100/1575 or 7970 ghz edition are a bit slower than R9 280X. Your only options are R9 290/290X or 780/780 Ti.

the problem is diminishing returns is kicking in over the 7950. you want to jump 2 steps over your 7950... 1 step would be the HD 7970 ghz ed or R9-280X or GTX 770 ($300-$400); 2 steps over would be r9-290 or the gtx 780 ($450-$550)... three steps up would be r9-290x ($550) or Titan ($1000) and possibly the soon to come 780ti (we don't know enough about it to know for sure, but we do know it will be listed at $800)

if you want a worthwhile upgrade them just buy a second 7950 and tell your friend to buy a 7950 somewhere else. dual 7950s will be much more cost effective then a 290 and will be about as fast give or take a few fraps.
