3570K with Gigabyte Ud3h or AMD 7970

Hi folks

Im using a i7 860 with cfx 5970 and am thinking of upgrading.

Which one should i change first?

The cpu or the gfx?

If the gfx, would it 'bottlenecking' the 860?

Please advise

Thank you !!

I vote for GFX ..I saw a world of difference going from 6950 to 7950.

..running a Lynnfield as well smile.gif

You would definitely see your biggest upgrade in getting a new GPU. You may as well get the AMD Radeon R9 280X since it costs the same as an HD 7970 but is the equivalent to an HD 7970 GHz Edition.

I was thinking of 7970 as i might crossfire in the future. As more 280x released, there might be alot of 7970s' at clearance sale smile.gif

I am running SLI 560 ti's, which would be very similar in performance to the 5870's you have listed in your system. Your CPU is still a very solid CPU and can OC well if you need/want it to.

I would suggest a graphics update first. The 5970's are still very capable performance wise, but there are, of course, better options out there now.
May I ask what games you play and what resolutions you play at?

Having dual 5970's I imagine power consumption isn't a priority? What are the things you would list as most important to you in gaming?

Ah, okay. Yeah, your PSU should definitely be solid.

Running crossfire 5870's, it is still a "capable" setup so in order to justify the expense of an upgrade, you need to get something fairly strong.
So, 22" eyefinity, means you are running 5760 x 1080, correct?

I would say nothing less than 3g of vram. Really I would suggest the 290/290x with the 4g of vram, since it appears as thought you like to keep your cards for a few years and get some use out of them.
Those newer cards will make a big difference down the road compared to the 7970/280x.
In all honesty, my 560 ti's have enough processing power to play anything I like and play it well, they are simply limited by their 1g of vram.

Now, that is assuming that it is in your budget. Were you referring to crossfire 7970's or a single card? The 7970 is a great card, think I remember seeing one on the marketplace here for 250 shipped. A Gigabyte Windforce card....

You could also find a good deal on some 7950's. Perhaps get a pair of those and crossfire them?
