[NS] Photoshop Source Code Stolen - Page 4

Even if Adobe lost all of its source code its primary customer base (enterprise) isn't going to start using dodgy clones with no commercial support. As someone mentioned earlier, the biggest impact is PR-related.

And no, GIMP is not going to get better. This code is still under a proprietary licence so it couldn't be included anyway. You couldn't even use it as a base for writing new code unless you went through a clean room reverse engineering process. Just because it's been stolen doesn't mean it's suddenly public domain.

Can't say I feel sorry for Adobe. I really dislike them because people spend ridiculous amounts of money on Photoshop (and other Adobe software) and only use maybe at most 10 % of its capabilities (my father for example, and make that 1% in his case rolleyes.gif ) .
But yea, they feel like pro's because they are photoshopping... (No offence if you are a professional user because I do realize it's pretty much used everywhere )

PS: paint.NET is a nice and free alternative for all those people who think they need Photoshop when they actually don't thumb.gif
Sadly it uses the .NET framework puke.gif

True, but they can learn from it and create their own implementations. It might give a lot of developpers their eureka-moment when they see how Adobe has done it

They can learn from it, but would they want to? The stodgy code Adobe uses is kind of radioactive.

No, they can't. They would need someone else to learn from it, document it, and then give them the documentation to base their new code on. If they read the code themselves and used logic from it to write their own code they'd be plagiarising. Rewording someone else's essay doesn't make it yours. The same goes for code.

I wonder how many lines of code these complicated programs contained? Photoshop? 3ds Max? Game engines?

You do realize most countries don't recognize US or EU patents, right?

China doesn't give a damn. Russia doesn't give a damn. India doesn't give a damn. All of these countries have growing tech industries that would benefit greatly from a knock off version of an Adobe product that is exactly that Adobe product.

Something tells me people willing to hack into Adobe's servers and steal credit card info + confidential files aren't too afraid of lawsuits. tongue.gif

If they're hacking into a big company's servers, I'd imagine they're not dumb enough to use the code to build a clone. They should be afraid of law suits because opening a website with a clone download will lead some type of trail to them.

Yes they would (although they most likely have pirated copies anyway), but we were discussing GIMP, which is not like Photoshop. Adobe's code would be incompatible with the GNU GPL.
