Upgrading from Phenom II X4 965 to FX 9370, worth ?

Hello,

Recently FX 9370 price has been dropping hugely, as i can buy it for 120€. But i'd like to know if that would be worth it or should i wait for amd new cpus considering that i've spent 150€ in my am3+ mobo a year ago and that my psu is only 400W (will probably need to upgrade that one to handle 9370's 220W TDP).

Thanks in advance!

for that price its worth it how ever your 400w psu probably wont be enough to run it safely and also your heatsink probably wont be enough unless you plan to undervolt the cpu smile.gif

Stock is 4.7 ghz right? That's high end air and CLC watercooling territory. You will need a new cooler.

My 2cents.gif :
Upgrade your PSU and wait for to see what is introduced in the FM2+ series. (And save for a new CPU AND Motherboard). I just recently upgraded from your same specs. I had the Phenom II x 4 965 with my HD 7950 and I replaced it with the FX-8320. The 8320 is underwater and overclocked to 4.8GHz and I can honestly say I can't really see a difference in my day-to-day usage and gaming. Obviously my benches went up - but who upgrades simply for a higher Unigine score? LOL (Yeah I know some people do - and can afford it). I gained a few FPS in a few games - but not enough to justify the upgrade. The 965 is still a viable gamer and as far as the FX-8xxx line - I have to say I was not impressed and I am an avid AMD fan and follower! The 9370 is a little better than the 8320, and a great overclocker (according to reports online) but I wouldn't place my money there if I were dealing with limited funds (which I always am!)
If the first few offerings for the FM2+ socket don't look promising - or don't interest you, maybe upgrade to the 9370 then.....

What you plan on doing with the computer will/should affect your decision. Do you need 8 cores? Are you experiencing issues with your 965? What memory speed are you using or would you like to use? Are you just wanting to upgrade because you can? Is the money burning a hole in your pocket? LOL
Think about it...

Well the main reason i wanna upgrade is because bf4 is out, i can run it with 50 fps(except some maps where it'd drop to 40) with everything set to low, i mean i need at least 60fps to play it properly. But i guess i'll go with your advice nostraD, if there is not much difference between an fx 8320 and a phenom x4 965, then it might not be worth and i'd better be waiting to see new steamrollers. Hopefully they're compatible with am3+ mobo, otherwise bye amd welcome intel :/

Thank you all for the answers

Ahhh BF4........have you been Beta testing? Have you read the reviews? It seems, right now, that BF4 is not favoring 6 or 8 core processors (Intel or AMD). People with faster 4 core processors seem to be having better experiences! There are some people that have even disabled all but 4 of the cores on their CPUs and had better experiences with BF4! With this knowledge in hand I would definitely re-think the 8-core CPU for now. Also, remember - BF4 is still in BETA (until November 1st) - even when it's released, there will be bugs. LOTS of people with better rigs than yours and mine are having laggy FPS in BF4 right now. Tolerate the lower settings until you can see what people are having success with. Go into the BF4 forums and ask questions. People will gladly tell you what they are running and if its working for them! Good luck! and may patience be on your side! lol

Seems a memory upgrade might serve you best!

I came from a 955be to my fx8350 and saw a good increase in speed in most of the stuff I do day to day which is mostly multitasking. I also noticed with games like Civ V where my 955be was at 80-90% mostly it came down to 40-50% same with other games.

The new coming for the FM2+ there going to be 4 cores first they will be stronger cores but will still fall behind the 83xx in multithreaded task, and you would need a new mobo you have a good AM3+ board.

I think your best bet is to play the games you play most pull up task manger and see what your cpu usage is running at. I upgraded mine because in games I played the most my 955be would be running hard at 90% or more so I went with the 8350 and don't regret it and I will be set for a while.

I like this thread. It brings up a question for me as well. I have a phenom 965be which I had overclocked to 4.0 on teh stock cooler but when gaming and such it was just too annoyingly loud. So, I took the OC down to 3.7 and usually keep it underclocked to 2.6 to reduce noise. It plays most of my games just fine at 2.6, albeit maxed out (but MUCH quieter). I also do a lot of blu ray compression with handbrake and makeMKV. Would an upgrade to the FX6300 be a worthwhile upgrade for the video compression? I'm satisfied with the 965be as far as gaming goes, but it takes about 5 hours to compress a blu ray from 20gb to 9gb. Which I can live with, but being faster would be awesome as it wouldn't be tying up my computer for 5 hours per movie (handbrake maxes out the cpu during compression).

this is my setup...

mobo:

Graphics:

PSU:

Eventually, I want tup upgrade my graphics card, but money is tight and i can play all my games on high or better settings. Can't do TressFX in Tomb Raider though.

thanks!
