Best cable modem?

Currently I have a Motorola 6121, I was considering installing custom firmware on it. Not sure what the best option for that is. Or possibly switch to a better alternative. what are your recommendations?

What do you mean "custom firmware"? Is it to hack the system to allow faster than paid for speed? If so, no discussion of that topic is allowed.

Why do you need a better modem otherwise? What's your current ISP package?

No, I just assume custom firmware would allow me to modify the already present dhcp server, and use it as a nat. Rather than run through a separate router, I could just run through a switch. also some traffic graphs and logging would be nice. Would allow for better troubleshooting on my end before I had to contact support and wait on hold for hours.

You can't modify the firmware on the modem at easily. It would require a JTAG cable, and that would only help you update to the current factory firmware there.

Most of the firmwares on the modems are managed by the CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) which is by the ISP.

There's not much you can really do for the modem it either works or doesn't.

Same with the DHCP Server it is managed by the ISP they usually assign a /30 block with 2 IP Addresses.

You can try accessing 192.168.100.1 for modem stats, but that's about as far as you can go.

I believe the SB6141 is currently the best on the market. You have the SB6121 which is a step down, but if you're not paying for faster speeds than what it can handle (171/131 vs. 343/131 max theoretical limits) it wont make any difference.

For router's get one of the new ASUS RT-N or RT-AC series. They can have custom firmware and let you do all you want.
