An Interesting Analysis in Power saving of 80 plus Platinum PSU over 80 plus Bronze.





Although the saving seem sizable when it is 24/7 for a year, under normal consumer usage model it will probably take the the whole warranty length of the Platinum PSU to pay back the price difference.

So it actually does save on power but it takes 2 years just to save up the difference. If you use a power supply for around 5 years then its saves about hundred or os.

Do note the yearly savings are for Using the Computer 24hr a day /7days a week for a year, For me I use mine desktop on average 7 hours/day o 38%n weekdays, 15 hours/day on weekends so about 9.2 hours per day, or only 38% as much as the 24/7 model.

You save more $ as the wattage goes up.

PSU at 80% efficiency: To get 500 watts your PSU has to pull 625 watts from the wall. To get 1000 watts, your PSU has to pull 1250 from the wall. At 500 watts the PSU wastes 125 watts, at 1000 watts, the PSU wastes 2x that, 250watts.

This means as the max power delivery of the PSU goes up, higher efficiency is going to save you more $.

You don't want to overkill by too large of a margin either. all 80Plus PSU are most efficient at 50% max rated wattage, as you get closer to 80% or more / 20% or less you lose efficiency. If you are looking for the most efficient system PSU wise you should find your typical(the weighted average power consumption based on your usage sceanrio) power consumption (say 300W), and get a Platinum PSU with 2X that power rating(600W).


Edit: Since I think Tsumi took "typical" to mean "maximum" let me explain myself here:

by typical I mean the weighted average based on your usage scenario.

If your PC only have 3 power consumption values: idle(I)/brsowing(B)/gaming(G), each consuming the same % of your computer time, your typical power consumption will be I/3 +B/3+G/3.

True, but it also varies on what type of PSU a user needs. I for example, will fully load the 1200watt I'm going to get. With more cards, I will get another. So the higher efficiency will still be better. Also, when reaching into the high wattage ranges, gold/platinum is almost a requirement. Most cables/breakers in buildings are rated for more than probably any desktop PSU can reach, but you never know. Old wiring or bad wiring might pose problems.

True, given a set wattage needed from the PSU, the higher the rating the bigger the power saving. I was just advocating against extreme PSU wattage overkilling.(like running a 1KW unit on a system with a typical draw of 350W)

Yes. A mistake would be to buy a high wattage platinum rated PSU and run a very load load, or buy a low wattage platinum rated PSU and run a very high load. A Bronze/Silver/Gold rated PSU that is right on or close to the the 50% point of what you are going to power will actually save you more money than the platinum.
