QUAD FIRE SET UP HELP PLEASE

Thread Starter
Hi Guys
Need some advice on what will give me the optimal perfomance with regards to the positioning of my GPUS on the G1 Sniper 5 motherboard Z87

Please be advised this motherboard has 2x 16 bit PCIe slots and 2 x8 bit PCIe slots

slot 1 = 16 Lane

slot 2 = 8 Lane

slot 3 = 16 Lane

slot 4 = 8Lane

The cards i have are :

7990 Watercooled

7970 Vapor X 6gb

r9 280 X TOxic

What combination would you guys configure and which card would be the best card to use as the primary card (the one that feeds the monitors?)

my monitors are 3 x 2560 x 1440

running mostly eyefinity for games at 7680 x 1440

BF4 .

Cheers

well they are suppose to go in

if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.

from gigabytes website?

if you want to put one in an X8 slot for more spacing you wont lose much performance!

Slot 1: 7990
Slot 2: blank
Slot 3: 7970/280x
Slot 4: 7970/280x

The 7990 should have it's own x16 bank because it's a dual GPU. 7990 should also be up top because you're going to want the 7990's display outs to avoid screen tearing. Preferably 3 MiniDP -> DP, but if you need active adapters, so be it.

Hi KyadCK

im actually running tri fire with the 7970 in th etop slot at the moment and the 7990 in the 3rd slot (so both in the 16 lane slots)

Due to my water cooling loop it would be much easier for me to try and keep that 7990 in the third slot. ALso im thinking this wil help seperate the heat form the 7970' and new r9 280 which will go above and below the 7990.

HOWEVER i am experiencing screen tearing at present which is fixed with Vsync but of course i would like to avoid using vsync if possible, do you think The screen wobble tearing is beacuse i have the 7990 in that third slot and not in my primary ? if so i will rearrange my loop.

PS i am using 2 x REALLY expensive accell mini display port to dual link dvi active adapters x 2 and the third is straight to the dual link dvi which are native to the monitors i have. Perhaps tey are createing the screen tearing ?

Keeping the 7990 on a16x lane is priority. Other than that, whatever suits your cooling needs.....

IMO:

7990
Blank
Toxic
VaporX

This means your 7990 is still getting decent airflow, but it'll eat the warmer air pushing up from the Toxic and VaporX. There's no perfect solution for ordering here, but your best options will feature the 7990 in a 16x slot. You could also go with:

Toxic,
VaporX
7990
Blank

But in this case the Toxic and VaporX will be eating the (very) warm air from the 7990. Still, at least the 7990 is in a 16x slot and is gettting unrestricted airflow.

OP 7990 is watercooled..... so it doesnt matter about warm air from toxic and vapor x....

I would actually suggest:

Toxic
blank
7990
vapor x

in this confige, 7990 has x16 lane, Toxic will get decent air flow and so as vapor x....

Toxic has 2 x mini DP..... you can connect 2 monitors here + DVI in which DVI supports 1600p......

I am not sure if its correct but Toxic has HDMI 1.4a and i believe it will support 1440p..... no sure though... but better buy a active DP for 2 more monitor + DVI out

doh.gif I can't believe I missed that important bit of info... Now that I know the 7990 is WC'd, your suggestion makes a lot of sense; lots of airflow + 7990 still in a 16x slot. I wasn't aware that having the 7990 in the top slot would do anything for screen tearing, but rather it would just give you more options for display outputs (the Toxic's display output selection is pretty much an ideal combo)
