Windows hang with Samsung SSD 840 Pro

Hi everyone,
I got tired of HDD scratching constantly in Windows 7 and wanted a boost in performance so I went ahead and aquire a Samsung 840 Pro 256G which I installed as main drive.

I am 100% sure my rig is ok with no defect, I have been using this computer for almost 3 years now without any issue.

After my Windows installation AND after patch installation, my system start hanging after a few minutes (random mostly) of use. Mouse freeze, applications freeze and the only thing left to do is reboot the PC.

I notice that it never happened before the second pass of Windows patch, where it install SP1 (might be a clue, I don't know).

Firmware on the SSD is at latest level (from factory) and I just updated the mobo (which wasn't far from the latest).

The SATA mode is set AHCI but Samsung Magician doesn't recognize it as so!

Motherboard Gigabyte P67A-UD4-B3
Intel Core i7 (first gen)
8 GIG mushkin RAM (4x2)
Video Nvidia GTX-460

At this point I tried a solution with CPU power set to 100% (can't remember exactly what is was but it was related to Power Option)

I did try the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) is the culprit" reg patch to no avail.

Am I the only one experiencing this issue with Samsung SSD? If not, anyone found a suitable solution besides packing up and falling back to HDD (which is pretty much the next step for me!).

Thanks for your help and support.

Regards

There's the problem. There's a problem with the newer Nvidia driver (they install from Windows update) on some computers.
There's even a thread on Nvidia's website acknowledging the problem and asking for info from users.
I had exactly the same (maddening!) problem (450 GTS). Tried everything. Uninstalled the newer driver, installed an older driver ---> problem GONE!

Do you happen, by any chance, to have this link to Nvidia thread?

I am looking for it now but no luck so far.

Besides, latest Bios update did not change anything to the problem. But I have a feeling since the beggining that this is a driver or patch related issue.

Thanks for pointing it out and I will get back here to share my findings.

There was a link here on OCN to the Nvidia forum thread discussing this, but I couldn't find it again either.

Just uninstall (perhaps Driver Sweeper from 3D Guru?) and install this one and life will be good again.

Thank you verry much Bill, you saved my day (and my ssd). I uninstalled all Nvidia drivers (Using Windows Uninstall) and reinstall the drivers you provided in the link and since I got no freeze whatsoever.

I owe you a huge beer.

Thank you. Hope this will help others with the same problem.

billbartuska you rock! smile.gif

This issue has really been bugging me for the past few weeks, my computer starting locking up randomly (once a day on average).
I also have a Samsung SSD 840 with an Nvidia 560ti.

I was running out of ideas with troubleshooting and started to think I had a hardware fault, motherboard, SSD, RAM etc.!
It does make sense that I updated the Nvidia drivers a few weeks ago and that's when the issue started.

I rolled back to the driver before the one you mentioned (that was stable on my system) and so far fingers crossed no more hangs..

I really hope Nvidia are aware of the issues they have caused and will address it in a later driver.
Does anyone know if Nvidia have acknowledged this?

A beer from me too billbartuska!
