Some info on the "red mod"

Hello all smile.gif.

I decided to do the ANTEC 620 mod on my pair of 7970 vapour-x gpu's. I read a lot on the subject and know all about the brackets that dwood used to do and I know some other guys make brackets for the coolers too.

So i ordered a pair of 620 coolers they are the revision 4 versions. I realized when looking at the Intel CPU mount that it may be possible to do the mod without any other brackets!!

All you have to do is make a paper template of the hole spacings on the pcb board and transfer them over to the Intel CPU mount. You need to be very very careful as the holes will end up extremely close to the edges of the bracket, but if you do it correctly it will not matter as the force required to hold the cooler on isn't very much!

I did a quick mock up as a proof of concept and it looks to work perfectly well as long as you use the correct screws. The finished job will have shorter black screws along with nylon washers and little spacers also. I have uploaded a few pics for you to see.

I cannot complete the job yet as I'm waiting on a pair of copper shims for the GPU die's! I should have them tomorrow and I can post up some results then.

So to recap.

I did this with an AMD 7970 Vapor-x GPU X 2

I wouldn't attempt this unless you are comfortable using a drill and hand tools and are prepared to ruin a mounting bracket in the process if you do it wrong.

I have no idea if it will work with other GPU's as I'm not sure of the hole spacings! but if the are similar to the 7970 then it should work.

I'm not sure if this will work with the older version of the ANTEC 620 as i believe the mounting bracket is a little different

I'm not sure if this info is known or not but I haven't come across it before so i said i would post it up thumb.gif

Another little tip is that the hole spacing on a 775 bracket is the exact spacing you need to mount an 80mm fan on to blow over the VRMs thumb.gif. I put CPU blocks on my 7970s, and mounted the fan on the bottom one that way (top card has personalized dwood bracket).

Crappy cell pic through my side window, but you get the picture.
