New system for Xmas, 3770K or 4770K?

Thread Starter
Well, I just found out I get to pick a new motherboard, CPU, and memory kit for Xmas. I'm torn on what to do. I have a nice water cooling setup that I will be using and I plan on overclocking.

I was thinking about getting:

ASRock Z77 Extreme6 LGA 1155
i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2133

But then there is the new Haswell CPU and Z87 boards and I can get that for about $50 more than the IB stuff above. I'm hearing from two camps out there, one says go with tried and true Ivy Bridge if overclocking, the other says go with Haswell if you get the opportunity to upgrade since price is so close and more features. Although Haswell may not overclock quite as well and more heat but is slightly faster clock for clock.

Thoughts??

$50 for about 5% of more performance? I would most likely chose to save the bucks and spend them on a faster GPU at some point. Unless IGPU is important to you biggrin.gif, or unless you want a Z87 board, Ivy would be the slightly better option value wise. If Ivy costs 500 then Haswell should cost 525. Anyway, you could not really go wrong with either option, you could also flip a coin on this tongue.gif

Always buy the latest hardware you can with your money. There is no reason why someone with hundreds to spend on a new computer should buy a dead LGA socket. 1150 will be dead soon enough too, so no need to rush into obsolescence biggrin.gif

I think you said you have a water cooling setup so heat shouldn't really be an issue. Go with haswell if you can.

Depends, what's your current setup?

U can do what you want, and im sure people will opose me but please stay away from ASRock Motherboards. Sure they are cheap and have great looking feature sets but they don't last and the support they give is horrible. Ive had a ASRock Z77 OC Formula for about 3 months with an i5 3570k and the first one came DOA... newegged replaced it easily enough. Replacement died on me 3 weeks ago, emailed ASRock and they said i could RMA it, i emailed the forms back and haven't heard a word since. Ive emailed back several times and even called and ive got no where. Im basically out of a $250 motherboard.

I myself not just because i own one, but would go with the haswell build. My 4770k overclocks better then my i5 3570k did its abit hotter sure, but i went from i5 to i7 with HT enabled.

If you can get a 1150 system why go with a dead one (1155)? Go for the 4770K

My thoughts were that 1150 is dead as well. So the 3770K is supposedly a better chance at overclocking. Either way, 3770K or 4770K, next upgrade I'll be getting another motherboard anyway. My systems usually last me about 2 years.

I'm thinking about asking if I can get a new GPU instead of the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Probably the biggest bang for the buck, especially since Radeon and NVidia in a price war right now. Then I can wait and see what's coming next for Mobo, CPU, and RAM. I'm running a Radeon HD 6850 - yeah, it plays Crysis 3 on High settings! lol

The only reason why I didn't go Haswell was because I was cherry picking my 3770K chips right when Haswell was coming out/came out, Found a good one after 4 chips.

If I could I'd go with Haswell because it's newer.
